Process for Developing a Service Learning Project
Contact QCC Service Learning (SL) Team to request information/support for partnership
Professor develops a SL course;
needs a community-based
organization (CBO) with whom to
collaborate on project
Or
CBO has a project that would be a good
learning experience/may need college
resources
QCC Service Learning Team researches/offers partnership opportunities
Two potential partners (faculty + CBO) meet to discuss possibility of collaboration; QCC
service learning team member(s) may also be present
Agreement to collaborate; project is jointly planned (several meetings/calls may be
needed)
Professor develops course syllabus with SL
component
CBO develops project plan within
organization
Professor explains to students how project
fits with course objectives
CBO provides orientation to students
Students begin to work on project with CBO
Professor has students
reflect and think critically
about what they are
observing and learning as
they do their work
Students apply course
concepts in their service
work, continuously
reflecting on how their
work informs their didactic
learning
CBO guides and directs the
work of the students,
providing ongoing feedback
to them and to the professor
As project comes to conclusion….
Professor evaluates students
on service and learning
Students evaluate their
work and the process of the
project team
CBO evaluates work of
students and outcomes for
organization/community
Academic presentations made to stakeholders; outcomes celebrated (one method of
reflection/integration)
Faculty and CBO consult on an assessment of the entire process and make decisions
about an ongoing relationship. QCC Service Learning team follows up with both to
gather information on outcomes.
