When creating a new course, some fields are required for the course to be submitted and approved. Note: you can save a course at any time and return to it later in order to complete and submit it for approval. 1.
Log into the BC Portal at portal.bc.edu. Click the My Services tab. Click Course Catalog Management. Start a Blank Proposal: use this when starting a new course from scratch. 1.
Browsing Existing Courses Click Browse Course Catalog. 2.
Two tabs are available: •

Browse by Subject Area: Click on the Subject Code you want to browse (i.e. ENGL). Click Select, and its courses display. Click the course, then the Select button under the course list. Browse by School: Click the School to browse (i.e. A&S) then Select, and its Departments display (i.e. Biology). Click the Department, then Select again. Finally, click the course, then the Select button under the course list. 3.

The New Course (Proposal) screen displays. At minimum, enter in the required fields (below) to submit the new course for approval. • Course Action • Course Schedule Request Title • Subject Code • Sponsoring Department • Course Number • Term • Catalog Course Title • Grading Scale • Transcript Course • Credits Title • Active Dates Other fields you may include are: • Print in Catalog • Frequency • Comments • Duration Count • Instructor(s) • Course Requisites (Prerequisites and • Administering Corequisites Organization As you enter information in each section, click the Save and Continue button. The final section, Review Proposal, allows you to review all the information you have entered one last time. You can edit any information as needed. Once you’ve verified that all the information is accurate, click the Proposal Actions drop-­‐down and select Submit Proposal. 2.

From the Home screen, select Find a Course or Browse Course Catalog to bring up the course to be modified. Select the course from your search list. Once the course is displayed, select Retire Course from the Course Actions drop-­‐down. Modifying a Course You would modify a course when making small
updates to the course, such as:
• Fixing typos.
• Updating/adding Requisites or
Corequisites.
• Changing the Instructor.
• Updating the Course Description.
Do not Modify a Course for major updates,
including:
• Changing the Subject Code.
• Changing the Course Number.
• Changing the Course Title (significant
changes – not just typos).
If you change these, you should use Modify with a
New Version.
To Modify a course, follow these steps.

From the Home screen, select Find a Course or
Browse Course Catalog to bring up the course
to be modified.
Select the course from your search list.
Once the course is displayed, select Modify
Course from the Course Actions drop-down.
Action List Remember to refer to your Action List to to see if
you have any questions needing answers or other
steps that need to be taken during the approval
process. You can also monitor the statuses of your
proposals.

Use Catalog Content Management to…
• Submit requests for course numbers using new
subject codes and the course sequencing and
common course number and title lists.
• Create, modify, and retire course numbers,
titles, and descriptions.
• Renumber new course numbers that affect the
degree audit to designate where they fall in the
audit. Lower-level undergraduate major courses
should be assigned a number at the 2000–level
(UIS 200–level). Upper-level major courses
should be assigned a number from the 3000–
4000 level (UIS 300– 400 level).
• Use new course numbers to prepare the 2014–
2015 undergraduate and graduate catalogs, the
master course schedule, and the Summer 2014
term.
• Cross list courses with descriptions and cross
listings managed by the owning department.
• Use the web–based crosswalk to find new and
old course numbers.
Use UIS to…
• Access the master course file including all
course sections and course restrictions.
• Access the master name file where degree and
class restrictions and full-time certification
flags will still be processed.
• Assure UIS course numbers still conform to the
course renumbering sequencing and degree
audit specifications for majors, minors, etc.
• Process registration and overrides using new
course numbers.
• View transcripts/academic history, which
include traditional numbers through the Spring
2014 semester and new course numbers
starting Summer 2014.
• Course grading and grade changes will still be
processed via the Portal.
