WAYNE VALLEY FIELD
One of the nation's most modern track and field facilities is
Wayne Valley Field, which wasdedicated March 30, 1974. The
Wayne Valleyfacility includesthefirst international track (400
meters) to have been built in the United States. The track itself
is a Chevron 440 surface, possibly the most resilient surface
ever produced. The entire layout of Wayne Valley Field is one
of the nation's most imaginative and modern in terms of
surface, spectator viewing and provision for electronic aids.
The track was named in the memory of Wayne Valley, a former
student-athlete who died in 1969. Hisfather, Wayne Valley Sr.,
was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerous
contributions to the OSU athlete program. Wayne Valley Sr. is
a highly successful businessman in the San Francisco Bay

Head Coach

(San Jose State, 1959)
First year Oregon State track and field coach Chuck McNeil
is no stranger to the Beaver track and field program having
been associated with OSU under coaches Sam Bell and
Bernie Wagner for 12 years. He will take over the head
coaching spotthis season, replacing Frank Morris, who leftthe
Beaver camp for Arizona State.
McNeil brings plenty of experience to his new post having
coached on all levels of competition. Asan OSUassistantfrom
1964 to 1976, he helped developed nine individual NCAA
champions while working in almost all areas of the sport. His
main areas of concentration included sprints, hurdles and
javelin, though he also handled jumpers and weightmen for
the Beavers.
A 1959 graduate of San Jose State University with a degree

and at San Jose State University. He also ran competitively for
Iw
in physical education, he received his master's degree from
Oregon State in counselling and Guidance in 1964. He is
currently working on a second master's degree. Originally
from California, McNeil competed as a sprinter in high school
the Southern California Striders and the Santa Clara Valley
Youth Village track clubs. His previous coaching experience
includes stints on the high school and juniorcollege levels. He
has been a member of the Oregon State PE staff since 1965.
McNeil also boasts international coaching experience
having coached in six foreign countries. Among his positions
was that of head coach for the Israeli National Team where he
developed athletes for the Moscow Olympics of 1980. McNeil
has also coached in Ghana preparing athletes for the Munich
Olympics and worked with track and field programs in
Tanzania in 1970 as part of a Fulbright professorship.

Mike Chriss, 27, joined the Oregon State staff in September
of 1982 after serving as an assistant track and field coach at
Tigard High School during the 1981-82 school year. He also
coached at Sprague High School in Salem from 1979-81.
A former football and track star for Medford High School,
Chriss picked up four letters in football as a defensive back
and ran hurdles in track where he was an AAA state champion.
He earned prep All-America honors in both sports.
At the University of Oregon Chriss played football as well as
participating in track. He graduated from Oregon in 1979 with
a B.S. in Health Education. His duties at Oregon State include
working with men's and women's sprinters and hurdlers.
Pacific-8 Conference, Sievers had best times of 3:59 in the mile
and 1:48.0 in the 800 meters. He was the Oregon AAU
champion in the mile in 1975 and won a bronze medal at the
World Games in Helsinki, Finland in 1978.
Sievers prepped at Twin Falls, Idaho, and helped his team to
three consecutive state titles running the half-mile. He won the
800 twice and was all-state three years. The 19-year-old
Sievers will coach the distance runners at OSU. He has
coached the Oregon State cross country team the past two
seasons and last fall led the Beaver women to a fourth place
finish in the NorPac Conference. Hrsrnen's team placed sixth
in the PAC-lOs with Gid Rysdam finishing 16th (among
American runners) at Nationals, the top finish for a Beaver
runner in 13 years.

OREGON STATE
Men's Track Preview
A lack of depth faces the Oregon State men's track
team as the 1984 season approaches, but the Beavers
will try to make up for it by utilizing their blue chip
prospects in several events.
New coach Chuck McNeil will inherit an OSU squad
which has a number of impressive individuals, but
injuries and the Olympic Trials will keep a few key
athletes on the sidelines.
The Beavers' top distance runner, Gid Rysdam, will
redshirt in 1984 to concentrate on the Olympic marathon
trials. The senior was a cross country All-American and
an NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase a year ago. His
sidekick in the steeplechase, Peter Warner, will also
redshirt after suffering an industrial accident during his
summer job.
Add multi-purpose thrower Chris Waltman to the list
of redshirts, and a lot of potential points will be on the
sidelines this year. Waltman is sitting out 1984 to work
on his strength and technique.
But McNeil is not without weapons. Coming off a
redshirt year of his own is big Ron Schmidt, a 6-4 senior
who should be among the best in the Pac-lO in the shot
and discus this year. Schmidt will carry the weight for
the Beavers in the throwing events. He is a 61-foot plus
shot putter and is just one-quarter of an inch from 200
Hildebrand this year.
The 400 meters looms as a weak event for the Beavers,
who are without a true quartermiler. Decathletes Greg
Ferguson and Kevin Knight should help, and middle
distance runner Dave Anderton could drop down from
the 800.
OSU is in the same boat in the hurdles, though Junior
Steve Wright will score some points this year, especially
in the intermediates. Wr!ght has bests of 14.81 and 52.64
and should break both this season.
"Steve worked out all fall with the cross country team,
so he should be a lot stronger thisyear," Chriss said. "He
doesn't have great speed, but he's got the strength and
determination to help us."
Knight and Ferguson, again, will score points in the
hurdles for OSU. Both came to OSU with strong
hurdling backgrounds, but it is in the decathlon where
they will stand out. Chriss feels both could place in the
Pac-lO championships in the decathlon and both will
improve on their personal bests.
The distance events will be quite interesting to watch
this year. OSU has three potential sub-i :50 half milers,
but the man to watch in the distances this season will be
in the 1,500. Dick Oldfield was an NCAA qualifier as a
feet in the discus. Schmidt qualified for the NCAA
championships in both events as a junior in 1982.
Outside of Schmidt, however, the Beavers have little
help in the shot or disc and no one in the hammer. The
javelin, however, is a different story. Sophomore Mike
Pedersen threw 245-6 in his rookie year and freshman
Jim Williams of Corvallis has unlimited potential.
The Beavers also look strong in the jumps. Junior
Kenny Taylor has a 52-11 triple jump to his credit and is
a solid Pac-lO contender. In the long jump, Larry
Clemons went 25-10 last year, Gary McCullough topped
24-0 and depth will come in the form of decathiete Kevin
Knight, also a 24-foot jumper. Transfer Tom Hildebrand
could be a factor.
The pole vault is shaping up as another OSU strong
point with senior Scott Davis as the key. Davis cleared
17-6 as a sophomore, but topped out at 17-0 last year.
He has the potential, however, to be an 18-foot vaulter if
he stays healthy. Another vaulter with great potential is
Greg Likens, from nearby Junction City. The freshman
set an Oregon prep record last year with his 16-6 vault,
junior in 1982, and OSU distance coach Gary Sievers
feels he could become as good as any miler Oregon
fourth best mark in the nation. His Junction City
Oldfield a sure bet in the 1,500.
The longer distances may be a problem, however. The
teammate, freshman Nick Till, is already up to 15-6 and
has potential for the future.
OSU will be decent in the sprints, but the Beavers lack
the one standout with burning speed. Rex Brown
State has had.
"I think Dick could break Mark Fricker's school record
in the 1,500 meters if he can get into the right race,"
Sievers said. "It wouldn't surprise me a bit, it wouldn't
surprise Dick and I don't think it would surprise Mark."
Oldfield is also a sub-i :50 half miler, joining sophomore standout Anderton and the ever-improving Craig
Nelson, who is a whisker away. Anderton and Nelson
could make the Pac-lO finals in the half this year with
loss of Rysdam and Warner for the year leaves the
burden on Karl Van Calcar in the steeplechase and he
returns for his sophomore year as the Beavers' top hope
was the top prep in the nation in the event last year. John
Frank is the only proven returner in the 5,000 and 10,000
in the 100 and 200, and will be joined by Clemons,
meters, though Sievers has hopes that junior Jary
Taylor, Hildebrand and freshman Mike Atkins.
"One of the highlights of last year was our 400-meter
relay team and three of the four members will be back,"
noted OSU assistant coach Mike Chriss. "We should be
okay again this year."
Brown, Clemons and Taylor were three of the four
relay members; they will be joined by either Atkins or
Krauser will come on.
A surprise may come in the form of sophomore
redshirt Shawn Gallagher, who has already run 3:46 in
the 1,500 this year. John Warriner has shown spark in

OREGON STATE
Women's Track Preview
will stand out on the short relay with help from senior
Julie Whitton (12.2) and heptathlete Kari Weston. The
The task of building the Oregon State women's track
team to full strength is a tough one, but there is a light
visible at the end of the tunnel as the Beavers approach
mile relay could be more of a problem, but Mast,
Weston, Meredith Howell and even Gibson are possibilities.
Weston is the Beavers' only pure hurdler and will
double in the highs and intermediates, while Howell and
senior Carina Westover wilt add points in the highs.
Westover, however, shou'd be a blue chipper in the
the 1984 season.
Last year was not a good season for OSU as a team,
despite some good individual performances. The
Beavers distance running corps was virtually decimated
and with it went any chance for team accomplishments.
It may be different in 1984. The lone distance standout
high jump. She has already cleared 6-0 this winter and is
just the third Beaver to top that plateau ever. The OSU
of last year, Karen Mathison, returns for her junior
campaign and she should have a little help this season.
Math ison had a best of 4:34 in the 1,500 meters last year
and has already neared that with a 4:59 indoor mile time.
She will be joined by a pair of freshmen who led OSU
to a successful cross country season. Peggy Murri of
South Salem High School has a prep best of 2:15 in the
half, but may be better suited to the 1,500. Sue Martineau
of North Eugene High should also help in the 1,500 and
3,000, but OSU distance coach Gary Sievers said her
best race may be the 5,000 meters.
coaches feel she s capable of going much higher, if
conditions are right.
Gibson, at 20-4 is a blue chipper in the long jump and
will hopefully surpass that mark. Mast and Howell have
long jumped before and could add some depth. But
Howell's event is the heptathion and Chriss feels she
may come into her own in 1984.
"Meredith is a real dark horse in the heptathion," he
said. "She has a PR of 4,796 last year, but she has made
Add a more seasoned Lisa Mullin in the 800, and
such a dramatic improvement, If you add up all the
Kathy Knowlton in the 10,000 and the Beavers won't be
pushovers in the distances. By next year, and maybe by
the end of this season, the distance events could turn
into a strength for OSU.
The sprints may also be promising, though the depth
is lacking. Senior Colleen Gibson s back and has 12.1
speed in the 100. She should run both relays at various
times during the year as well as the 200, but her primary
task will be the long jump. Gibson has a best of 20-4 and
went to nationals a year ago.
Freshman Lisa Curry, from San Francisco's Mission
personal bests she has made just this year, she'd be over
5,000. I think she can qualify for nationals this year and
that would take a 5,340 total."
The throwing events will consist of Kam Johnson. The
hard-working junior from Astoria threw 49-5 in the shot
a year ago, and 152-6 in the discus and should be ready
to meet national qualifying standards in 1984.
Depth is the biggest problem for the Beavers, but OSU
coach Chuck McNeil can take advantage of the Beavers'
multi-talented athletes by stacking certain events.
Gibson, for example, can run anything from the 100 to
400 and either relay as well as long jump; Westover can
hurdle as well as high jump; and heptathiete Howell can
fill in anyplace. Her shot put ability may be a real
surprise this year.
High, should be the top OSU sprinter if she can stay
healthy. Curry has sub-12 speed in the 100.
"She should break the school record in the 100 this
year," reasoned sprint coach Mike Chriss, "and she
could break the 200 if she works at it." Both marks are
held by Asa Pennington, who graduated last year.
NOTES: Though Oregon State is improved on the track,
the Beavers best hopes for sending people to nationals
are in the field events. Westover has already qualified in
the high jump; Gibson is a strong possibility in the long
jump; and Johnson could go in the shot put, maybe the
discus. Howell is another bet at the heptathlon.
The Beavers could be improved in the sprints if Curry
The 400 meters lacks depth, but Marcia Mast will
score points for the Beavers. Thejunior from Milwaukee
has a best of 58.8 and should be down around 58-flat this
year, but the only backup is unproven freshman Arleta
Reese from Echo.
The relays could be decent, but it is unlikely the
comes through, but could be in trouble if she doesn't.
The distances will be vastly improved over last year, but
Beavers could round up enough bodies to have two top
lineups in the same meet. More than likely, they will
stack their top people in one event. Gibson and Curry
