“Champions of Breakfast”
Award
Nominations due February 1, 2005
The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) is
pleased to announce the 2005 “Champions of Breakfast”
Award for the School Breakfast Program (SBP). In an
effort to encourage and reward best practices in school
nutrition program, the Department will recognize
outstanding achievement of schools.
Potential “Champions” are schools that developed
activities and/or other creative or innovative practices that
promoted the school breakfast program, increased
participation in an existing school breakfast program or
established a new breakfast program in a nonparticipating
site(s).
Counties are encouraged to nominate schools for outstanding and innovative practices in the
SBP that took place during the current and previous (2003/4) school years. Two elementary,
two middle and two high schools will be recognized as “Champions of Breakfast.” Winners will
be honored at a special “Champions of Breakfast” event in Charleston during March 2005. The
“Grand Champion of Breakfast” will be announced at this time!
Submit nomination applications by February 1, 2005 to Daniel Todd at the West Virginia
Department of Education, Office of Child Nutrition.
A nomination should consist of:
1. Name of school being nominated, address and telephone;
2. Contact school mailing address;
3. Size and average daily participation of rate for breakfast;
4. Name of person submitting nomination;
5. Phone, fax and mailing address of person submitting nomination; and
6. Description of the practice and out comes (not to exceed 300 words).




May include:
Relevant history, impact, and cost effectiveness;
Barriers to participation and how they were eliminated;
Partnerships that were developed within the community to collaborate on ways to
improve the breakfast program participation; and
Activities to promote School Breakfast Week.
7. Supporting materials may include:
 Photographs or newspaper articles documenting activities or changes;
 One copy of any instructional or promotion materials that have been developed.

There is no limit to the number of nominations each county may submit. The criteria, which will
be used in evaluating nominees, are provided in Attachment 2.
NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY WVDE BY February 1, 2005. Nominations
received after this date will not be considered.
After selection and notification is made, all participants will receive a list of those nominated, the
winners and their activities.

“CHAMPIONS OF BREAKFAST” AWARD CRITERIA
1.
Innovation (20 points)
An idea that gives a new and effective twist to an old problem or solution or that is an
innovative and successful addition to school nutrition program should be rated
accordingly.
2.
Impact (30 points)
Evidence shows increased participation and/or increased support and involvement of
students, patents, teachers, and the community.
3.
Cost effectiveness and efficiency (20 points)
The practice makes best use of the available resources and exemplifies good management
practices. Labor and budgetary requirements are reasonable in relation to the results.
4.
Sustainability (10 points)
Evidence shows that practice will be sustained and make long term positive impact.
5.
Transferability (10 points)
The practice can reasonably be replicated by other schools.
6.
Presentation (10 points)
The material should be well presented. It should be well organized, complete, clear and
succinct. Although well-written material may be rated highly, objective measures of
success, results, and such items as photographs or letters of support from appropriate
users, i.e., students, PTA member or teachers should also be considered as part of the
presentation.
