Legislation in full swing
 House Bill: 1331
Purpose to have students more involved with college’s decisions
Community colleges not explicitly included
 Safety (Senate Bill: 5094)
Requires notification of levels two and three sex offenders in higher ed
Inform all students there is a sex offender on campus w/specific identifying
information about the sex offender with directions how to get more
information. SBCTC stance: wait and see
 Mentoring (Senate Bill: 5026)
Develop mentoring programs for at-risk elementary students to expose them to higher
education. To be developed with existing funds – no new money. SBCTC: not
recommend.
 Online Transfer Advising (House Bill 1320)
Requiring higher education online advising system for transfer students. Third time
introduced. Could cost two (2) million per year to operate. SBCTC stance: wait and see;
where will funds come from?
HB 1011
Waive resident tuition criteria for veterans. Allow veterans to pay WA state tuition
 HB 1109
Priority registration for veterans; SBCTC support

SB 5087
Contrary to HB 1079 that passed a few years ago (state registration status for
undocumented students). Removal of HB 1079. SBCTC stance: not recommend
 HB 1208
Establishment of digital college in the high schools. No fiscal note yet. Collaborate with
Running Start. Principle of bill – assist under-prepared students?

Washington Students Community Colleges Association
New association to provide voice for students in community college system
 College Bound Scholarships

Suggestion: Integrate SAI into discussions concerning benefits of career services because
SAI has money
Follow-up individually w/people who did not come
Change meetings to 1.5 day vs. the current one day set-up
 Allow more time for professional development; networking
 Take poll/survey for meeting dates to get largest consensus
The Assessment Question Workshop
Large group broken up into smaller groups for discussion (see handout).
Large group discussion followed on whether to keep, eliminate or revise the 12
recommendations
Brian will make follow up edits with help of a few others in the group
