The St. Lucie County School Board is providing an opportunity for eligible third grade students
to attend a reading camp, CAMP S’MORES. The camp is an opportunity for students who
scored in Level 1 on the reading portion of the 2009 third grade FCAT to receive additional
intensive instruction in reading. However, attendance does not result in automatic promotion
to the next grade.
State law allows students who score in Level 1 on the 3rd grade FCAT reading to be promoted
if they can demonstrate reading proficiency on another state-approved reading test. The
State of Florida has approved the SAT 10, a nationally recognized reading test, to meet this
requirement of the law.
Promotion to the next grade will be determined by your son’s/daughter’s score on the SAT 10.
If your child scores in the 45th percentile or higher, they will be promoted. Should they score
below the 45th percentile, they will be retained. The SAT10 will be administered on July 16,
2009. Our hope is that with the additional instruction, your child will then take the SAT10 and
meet the state required 45th percentile or better.
Please complete the registration form and return it to your child’s teacher immediately. Forms
must be turned in no later than Friday, May 29, 2009.

Dear Parent:
State law requires all 3rd grade students to demonstrate reading proficiency based on specific
assessment criteria. Students new to the district who have not taken the FCAT SSS or FCAT
NRT must also demonstrate a level of proficiency in reading prior to being promoted to fourth
grade. State law allows students who score in Level 1 on the 3rd grade FCAT reading to be
promoted if they can demonstrate reading proficiency on another state-approved reading test.
The State of Florida has approved the SAT 10, a nationally recognized reading test, to meet
this requirement of the law.
Since your child is new to the district, your child is eligible to attend a reading camp, CAMP
S’MORES. The camp is an opportunity for students to receive additional intensive instruction
in reading and take the state-approved reading test to demonstrate proficiency.
Promotion to the next grade will be determined by your son’s/daughter’s score on the SAT 10.
If your child scores in the 45th percentile or higher, he/she will be promoted. Should he/she
score below the 45th percentile, he/she will be retained. The SAT10 will be administered on
July 16, 2009. Our hope is that with the additional instruction, your child will then take the
SAT10 and meet the state required 45th percentile or better.

Estimados Padres:

St. Lucie County School District
Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)
2009 Summer Program
Attendance and Tardiness Policy
The St. Lucie County School District is a provider operating a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (300 hour)
Summer Program under the guidance of the St. Lucie County Early Learning Coalition.
This program will be operating from June 16, 2009 until August 6, 2009. This instructional period
consists of 32 days.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance during the scheduled instructional days is of utmost importance to remain in the VPK
program. Your child’s attendance is a critical factor of success in kindergarten. Funding for this
program is linked to your child’s attendance.
TARDINESS
Arrival time for VPK is 8:00 A.M. The instructional day begins promptly at 8:00. We utilize our
breakfast time as valuable teaching opportunities. All children are expected to be in place and ready to
begin at 8:00. Delayed arrivals are disruptive to the group in progress and also difficult for the arriving
child. We understand that is occasionally unavoidable to be “running late”. However, this practice
should not become a regular practice.
ABSENCE
The current legislation allows seven or fewer excused absences per calendar month. Documentation of
an absence must be submitted in writing.
Absences and tardiness may be excused under “extraordinary circumstances” if appropriate
documentation is provided. These include:
• Illness or injury of the child or the child’s family member which requires
hospitalization or bed rest
• Physician or dentist appointment
• Infectious disease or parasitic infestation
• Funeral service, memorial service, or bereavement upon the death of the child’s
family member
• Life-threatening illness or injury of the child’s family member
• Compliance with a court order (e.g. visitation, subpoena)
• Special education or related services as defined in 20 U.S.C.§ 1401 (2004) for
the child’s disability
• Observance of a religious holiday or service, or because the child’s or parent’s
religion forbids secular activity on the instructional day
• Family vacation, not to exceed five excused absences per program year
• Extraordinary circumstances beyond the control of the child and the child’s
parent
I understand the terms of this attendance and tardiness policy. My signature is acknowledgement of my
review and acceptance of the terms of this policy.
