Course Description: This course is designed for students seeking an adult high school diploma through
the High School 21 Program, students studying for the GED exam, and ESL students seeking
educational enrichment. In this course, students investigate US History and Government through a
variety of multimedia, reading, writing, fine art and music. Students respond to a wide variety of
themes, by era in American History, beginning with the American Revolution through the development
of our modern government, from the 1600s to the present. Students can earn additional credit if they
demonstrate the requisite competencies in reading and writing. WAC 180 51-061 CASAS post-test
will be given after 45 hours of instruction.

History through exploration of texts, audio visual media, fine
art, and music of historical eras

Analyze and discuss how people, events, and movements have
shaped the history of the United States.

Read and write with understanding historical texts and
demonstrate ability to synthesize important information

Organize information, apply good note taking strategies, and
use this information to respond to written assignments.

Evaluate and interpret historical documents, evaluate meaning
of new vocabulary and , respond to important questions
regarding the development of our democracy and government,

Course Topics:

Practice academic research and writing skills using the
computer, evaluate multimedia information for quality and
credibility and produce authentic written work

Access, interpret, and respond to historical maps, data and
graphics

Create artistic presentations and projects that explore, the arts,
political cartoons, and music, from our historical eras and
discuss how visual and audio media can be an important
expression of the issues, attitudes and ideas that have developed
throughout history.

