2. COURSE TEXTS:
Required text: Systems Analysis and Design (5th edition) by Dennis, Wixom, and Roth; and my lecture notes. This
text is available in hard copy and eBook format. The hard copy book can be purchased at Barnes and Noble on High
Street
3. COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES:
The focus of this course is the study of systems, and the principles of systems analysis and design. This course
introduces you to organizational systems analysis and design, and presents ideas that provide powerful insights
about a large spectrum of analysis and design issues. This course aims to give you a feeling for the problems and
techniques of systems analysis and design, and the application of such techniques to real life business analysis
problems.
4. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
• You are expected to have read carefully the assigned portion of the book prior to coming to class; most of
the class time will be devoted to the discussion of applications and extensions of the material in the book.
• You are expected to complete all assignments.

You are expected to attend class and participate. There will be material covered in lectures that will be on
the midterms and final that may not be in the book or published class notes. If you are unable to attend a
class, please get notes from one of your classmates.
Solutions to problems may not be “copied” and “pasted” from external sources. The purpose of the
assignments is not to find a solution on the Internet. If you do find some useful information on the web or
from another source it should be referenced! Evidence of cheating in any form will be met with serious
punishment including formal channels at the University level.
5. GRADING POLICY:

Tentative allocation of points. Depending on time available I may remove or alter these assignments. In
the event that this happens, those points will simply be subtracted from the total available for the class

o Homework problems / Quizzes: 100 (6 assignments at 20 points each, drop lowest)

7. ARRANGEMENTS FOR ASSIGNMENTS:
Note that some assignments might take more than a few hours to finish. The assignments are to be submitted to
Carmen prior to the beginning of the class session that it is due. No late assignments will be accepted - no
exceptions.

3. Discussions – Use this area to post questions on the course material, homework, class project, etc… If you
prefer to post anonymously, the system allows you to do that. I encourage you to assist your fellow students
and answer questions if you know the answers. I will give class participation credit to those that assist in
answering question on CARMEN. I will check this site every other day at a minimum. Only confidential
questions should be e-mailed to me. If you have an urgent question, please post it to Carmen and send me
an e-mail as well so I know to check the site and I will respond as promptly as I can. Please don’t wait till the
last minute and expect immediate responses.
4. Dropbox – All homework assignments and the class project should be submitted electronically through the
Dropbox tool.
5. Quizzes – we will not be leveraging the quizzes portion of Carmen in this class. Quizzes, midterms, and the
final exam will be distributed in paper format in the classroom.
