UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA STUDENT HEALTH CLINIC ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2012- JUNE 30, 2013 STUDENT HEALTH CLINIC AT-A-GLANCE: MISSION: To serve the student community by preventing and treating illness, promoting responsible habits and monitoring the overall health of the campus. STAFF: DIRECTOR, PHYSICIANS (3), Physician Assistants (2), Psychiatrist (One at seven hours per week), Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Nurses (7), Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician, Lab Technologist, Medical Receptionist (1), Patient Account Representative, Administrative Specialist, Accountant, Information Technology Specialist, Student Staff (8). SERVICES: PRIMARY CARE: General Medicine, Nursing Services, Preventative Medicine, Mental Health Services, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Immunization, Travel Medicine, Treatment & Procedures, Spinal Reflex Analysis Therapy, and Health Education. MEDICAL SUPPORT SERVICES: Appointments, Third Party Insurance Billing, Immunization Compliance, and Health Information Management. ADMINISTRATION: Student Health Insurance, Student Satisfaction, Accounting & Fiscal Controls, Marketing, Website, Student/Parent Orientation, Information Technology, Quality Assurance, Accreditation, and Staff Development. BUDGET: The Student Health Clinic annual budget is $2.4 million. The Mandatory Student Health Fees constitute 67% and the Student Health Clinic revenue 33% is covering the remaining portion of the budget. GOALS: 2012-2013 1) Created an infection control cleaning and surveillance policy and procedure for all areas of Student Health Clinic. 2) Implemented a health care provider best practice standards committee. The committee created evidence based clinical guidelines for pain management, ADD/ADHD diagnosis and treatment, and sleep hygiene. 3) Established a perpetual inventory for all pharmacy products. 4) Streamlined the electronic remittance process for health insurance reimbursement for health clinic services. 5) Converted the Student Health Clinic website to Drupal, created new web content and added interactive health education features. 6) Completed multiple quality improvement studies within all areas of the Student Health Clinic. Accomplishments and Changes: Achieved a three year accreditation status after the April AAAHC survey, implemented an inventory reconciliation process for medications and immunizations, hosted a meeting with Iowa State and the University of Iowa Student Health Clinic staffs to discuss current trends in College health, collaborated with the Study Abroad office to offer a record number of travel consultations (292) for students, faculty and staff, conducted a measles table-top drill in conjunction with the Black Hawk County Health Department and Iowa Department of Public Health. Student Organization: The role of the University of Northern Iowa Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is to inform students about fees, services, and educate students about health issues and prevention. The twenty members are comprised of students and Health Center staff. In 2012-2013 over 2,200 students were impacted through outreach programming at a variety of locations on campus. Oversight: Vice-President for Student Affairs, Director of University Health Services, Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), Board of Regents State of Iowa, and Student Health Clinic Governing Board.
