During December 2013 there were over 640,000 visits to overseas healthcare related pages. This was a 44% increase compared to December 2012. The percentage of NHS Choices traffic made up by visits to overseas healthcare content during December 2013 was 1.96%. At its highest in
July 2013, this figure was 5.41%.
Peak visits of 1.68 million were recorded during July 2013, when a 594% increase in visits the common health question (CHQ) ‘how can I keep my baby safe during hot weather?’ helped to give the monthly visits total a boost. The CHQ received close to 31,000 visits during the month compared to just below 4,500 the previous month. Other big-risers during July 2013 included a 180% increase to 177,810 visits to the ‘insect bites and stings symptoms’ page, along with significant rises to all other ‘bites and stings’ pages and a 30% rise in visits to the CHQ ‘how can I delay my period while on holiday?’ which received over 26,000 visits.
Despite overall site visits rising notably during October 2013, visits to overseas healthcare content actually fell by 13%, indicating that it was the summer holiday season and hot weather that had boosted visits to the content area and not just uplift in overall site traffic.
The most popular overseas healthcare search term for the reporting month was ‘travel insurance’, which interestingly the top search term not driving traffic to NHS Choices. Despite this, NHS Choices was still the number one website receiving traffic from overseas healthcare search terms.
