WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT SENIOR TRANSITION Senior year not taken seriously Low ACT and SAT scores High remedial rate in English and mathematics Students unprepared for the workforce National completion rate for college is approximately 40% According to the WV Higher Education Policy Commission… WV students in college developmental courses is on the rise (33.3% in 2004; 34.1% in 2005); Fewer students completed the ACT core (4 English; 3 math; 3 science and 3 social studies) in 2005 than did in 2004 (dropping from 31.2% to 28.7%); and 37.6% of WV students entering college in Fall of 2004 completed 30 hours their first year and the number dropped to 33.8% in 2005. CREATE CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION OF SENIORS Provide career guidance and advisement Provide a planned system of extra help and support Involve business and community leaders offering a structured work-based learning program Use data for continuous improvement Provide students with post-secondary opportunities while still in high school Enroll seniors who are not ready for post-secondary work in catch-up mathematics and English courses and credit recovery Ensure that students who do not plan to further study are participating in a career/tech. program to advance their career Enroll all seniors in at least three academic courses Require a senior project that includes a research paper, a product or service and an oral presentation
