We are going to discuss how we make choices so that we can have the things we need before we get the things we want. (Keep this discussion very simple regarding the aspect of banking. Focus more on the issue of choices, goals, etc.) Author: Diana J. Sayre (Kanawha County Schools) HOW DID I GET THAT? GRADE K LESSON 2 HOW DID I GET THAT? Discussion: GRADE K LESSON 2 1. After reading the story, ask the students if they have seen their parents pay for goods with cash, credit cards, debit cards and/or checks. 2. Review the book and where money is kept (bank) and that you still need money in the bank to write a check, use your debit and/or credit card. Not all people have a bank account, but many do. (Explain what happens when you spend more money than you have in the bank – a financial penalty.) 3. Why might it be a good idea to keep your money in the bank? 4. What can you do if you want something but don’t have enough money for it (save allowance, clean your room, etc)? 5. Explain what a goal is (simply, when you work towards something) and that if you save some of your money and not spend all of it, you can choose to buy it later. 6. Ask students to think of something special they received recently. What choices did the person make in order to buy it for you? Did they have to save, or instead, not buy something they wanted or needed? At this time, have students draw a picture of this item and go around to each child, if possible, and briefly discuss how they obtained it (from whom, did they have to save for it, etc. and when discussing they will become aware of the decisions the person had to make in order to obtain the special item.)
