As the end of the semester approaches
this is a good time to login to CardCat and
review your checked-out items in the “My
Library Account” section. Be sure to renew
or return items that are due soon.
Out of town this summer? You can still
make use of the library’s resources online
including CardCat, the Avery Index, the
Architecture Images Collection, and many
more. Feel free to email or call us if you
have any research questions.
If you will be on campus, make a note
of our summer hours at left. You may also
want to take advantage of the on-shelf holds
service and put a hold on items in CardCat
so they are waiting to be picked up when
you visit campus.
Enjoy the summer!
Two of the Archive’s MSHP graduate
assistants, Matt Kriegl and Seth Elder, have
collaborated with two History Department
GAs at University Libraries’ Archives &
Special Collections to produce an exciting
exhibit on historic downtown Muncie
architecture. The exhibit features original
material for some of Muncie’s most
interesting buildings from both the
Drawings and Documents Archive and
Archives & Special Collections. Included in
the exhibit are architectural drawings,
construction photographs, and ephemera
from times when the buildings were alive
with dances, movie showings, and train
travel. The exhibit will be on display from
April 27-July 11 in Bracken
Library, 2nd floor.

Students Study Samples for Class Project
By Cindy Turner, Visual Resources Curator
During spring semester over 80 percent of
Miguel San Miguel’s ARCH 100 class
completed an extra credit project using the
Building Materials Samples Collection in the
Visual Resources Collection (VRC).
In preparation for the assignment, San
Miguel reviewed a list of all the samples
available in the VRC and selected specific
materials for the students to choose from.
Another list of topics was chosen from the
Transmaterials books by Blaine Brownell that
were on course reserve in the Architecture
Library. The project required each student to
do basic research and prepare “material

materials he or she chose from the
lists.
Throughout the project, VRC
personnel instructed students on
how to find material samples in
CardCat, the basics of CSI codes and
how to use them to find more
materials in the collection, and how
to locate their chosen samples in the
VRC. The students not only learned

about materials, they also learned
some valuable library research skills that they can use in future projects.
We look forward to doing more projects such as this with other classes.
