Narrative Report Toby Seay Assistant Professor Music Industry Program Paper Presentation: Primary Sources in Music Production Research and Education: Using the Drexel University Audio Archives as an Institutional Model. The Sixth Annual Art of Record Production Conference, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds, UK, December 3rd – 5th 2010 The Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production is an international and interdisciplinary organization that promotes the study of the production of recorded music. As a professor of audio engineering and a researcher of audio preservation and archiving, the ARP conference was an opportunity to tie my scholarship in archiving to the pedagogical needs in audio technology education. With a delegation of scholars and educators, this conference displayed the needs and trends of audio technology education. My paper presentation highlighted the need for resources within a music production education. By using the Drexel Audio Archives as a model, I described how the instability in the recording studio business combined with an institutional need for audio resources provides an opportunity for institutions of higher learning to create archives of recorded audio collections. These archives would serve the recording industry by preserving their audio collections while providing resources for students of recorded audio. While pointing to the difficulties in creating such archives, I highlighted the valuable research opportunities that would be offered once these archives are created. This paper was very well received, especially among musicologist delegates. Delegates from both France and Germany expressed their desire for further discussion within the context of preserving cultural heritage. By attending this conference, I gained great insight to the needs of music production educators from around the world. I met new colleagues from Sweden, England, Germany, France, South Africa and Canada, with whom continued networking and potential collaborative scholarship will ensue. With a more globalized world and continued instability in the music industry, this conference provided great insight into the study of recorded music, which will enhance and shape my scholarship and teaching.
