This involves study of domestic, international, and foreign business environments and of business practices and problems related to them. Other studies include exchange controls and the operations of foreign exchanges to formulate policies on investments and transfer of capital. There may also be specialization in the analysis of economic conditions in a particular geographic area. It is highly recommended that this specialization be studied as a compliment to any other specialization within Fisher College of Business. FIELDS: U.S. industrial, financial and commercial firms involved directly or indirectly with international trade and foreign investment, or in U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies, require specialists in marketing, finance, accounting, production, personnel, etc., who are also familiar with foreign exchanges, foreign environments, crosscultural management, international channels of distributions and investment analysis. Consular work and other aspects of government foreign service deal with interpreting our trade policies to other countries, protecting American shipping and legal economic interests, and making reports based on observation and analysis of such matters as major financial transactions, trade and tariff policies, and general market conditions. The international trade economist studies the theory and practices of foreign exchange from the standpoint of both bankers and foreign investors dealing with the relationship of foreign exchange to international trade and financial problems. OUTLOOK: Government interest in the structure of foreign nations and the investment policies of domestic enterprise result in career opportunities in both government and private industry. Employment for well trained personnel is expected to continue to increase. At the present time, however, few jobs are available to those without special backgrounds or job experience. Most first assignments for Americans are in the U.S. PREPARATION: The complexity of the political-economic factors involved in international relations recommend a Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in international business administration, heavily weighted in the area of business systems and practices. A knowledge of economics and political science, and fluency in at least one foreign language are highly desirable. QUALIFICATIONS: Those entering the field of international business should have an understanding of world business conditions, of alternative business opportunities, and of basic business principles. Those entering this field must consider frequent travel and diplomacy as basic characteristics of the field. Many of the private industries do not have training programs in the beginning levels of their international departments; therefore, it may be necessary to obtain prior experience in other departments of the organization. EARNINGS: Depending on the field of activity, i.e., economic analysis or marketing and the sponsoring activity, i.e., government or private industry, pay scales would be determined largely by individual qualifications at specific positions available. Starting salaries are competitive and career earnings are very favorable, combining both industry stability and individual growth potential. The average starting salary for 2005-2006 for Fisher students in this major reporting to Fisher Career Services was $47,500. For more specific salary information regarding location and job title, please check out Salary Wizard on Fisher Interview Trak and for national salary information, refer to the NACE quarterly Salary Survey, in the Resource Room in Career Services. CAREER SERVICES: The Fisher College Career Services Office in 150 Gerlach Hall has numerous services to assist all students with their career needs including assistance with resume writing and interviewing, an active internship program, on-campus interviews, employment and employer resources, and career planning advice.
