Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History
The Ball State University Foundation was established in October 26, 1951 by a group of nine that
included University president John R. Emens. The group came together with a few thousand dollars
in assets, and sought to create an organization that could partner with Ball State University, then Ball
State Teachers College (1929-1965), as an independent benefactor, providing funds for scholarships and
other needs. Raymond E. White began to research the Ball State Foundation in the 1990's and in 2001
published Fifty Years of Beneficence: The Ball State University Foundation 1951-2001. This collection
contains many autocassette interviews with foundation members about the history and gifts to the Ball
State Foundation.
Raymond White was born October 11, 1933 in Luling, Texas. He recieved his undergraduate degree in
education from Southwest Texas State College in 1955. Raymond went on to pursue his M.A. in United
States history along with a minor in political science from the University of Texas in 1957. In 1965
he completed his Ph.D in United States history. From 1967-1977 he worked at Ball State University,
teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in United States history.
Scope and Contents
This collection includes documents, correspondence, financial statements, newsletters, publicity about the
Ball State University Foundation in Muncie, Indiana ranging from 1951 to 2000 regarding Foundation
history, interviews with Foundation members, funds, and proofs from the Fifty Years of Beneficence.
