Historical Note
The railway system in the United States began to develop in the early Nineteenth Century and
experienced rapid growth from 1830-1860. The first transcontinental railway was completed in 1869 as
the Union Pacific and Central Pacific lines were linked at Promontory Summit. Significant confrontations
between organized labor and railroad companies and manufacturers occurred in the late 19th century. The
increased availability of automobiles, the development of highways throughout the United States, and
tumultuous economic trends led to a decreasing railroad ridership in the early Twentieth Century; a trend
which was temporarily arrested during World War II as a result of the increased transportation of military
personnel and supplies across the nation. Railroad ridership continued to decline following World War II
with the continued increase of automobile traffic and the growing availability of air transportation. That
decline resulted in the merger of railroad companies and the discontinuation of many routes in throughout
the second half of the Twentieth Century.
