University of California
Fall 2001
Foreword
The University of California Statistical Summary of Students and Staff for fall 2001 is divided into three sections:
Enrollment, Degrees Conferred, and Personnel. Each section provides information for the University as a whole
and for each of the nine campuses at which students are enrolled: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles,
Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. The Personnel section also provides
information for the Office of the President, the Division of Agriculture & Natural Resources, and the Merced
campus.
In addition to current-year information, this Statistical Summary of Students and Staff displays statistics for the
prior year and the percentage change between years. Further historical data is available on the Statistical
Summary of Students and Staff web site at:
http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/uwnews/stat/
Data for the Statistical Summary of Students and Staff were generated from the University of California Corporate
Student System and Corporate Personnel System. These systems are maintained by the Office of the President
and incorporate data provided by the campuses. Questions about the content of the enrollment and degree
sections of the report should be directed to Information Management at (510) 987-0394. Questions about the
content of the personnel section of the report should be directed to Information Management at (510) 987-0398.

Explanatory Notes
1. All enrollment counts consist of students who are registered at the end of the third week of classes. Students
in the Education Abroad Program are included in the enrollment of each campus.
2. Undergraduate students who have met all the requirements for admission to the university are classified
according to the number of units of credit completed as follows:
Freshman
between 0 and 44.9 quarter units (0-29.9 semester units);
Sophomore
at least 45 but not more than 89.9 quarter units (30-59.9 semester units);
Junior
at least 90 but not more than 134.9 quarter units (60-89.9 semester units);
Senior
at least 135 quarter units (90 or more semester units).
In addition to those students who have met all of the requirements for admission to the university are Special,
Limited and Postbaccalaureate students defined as follows:
Special
lower division students of mature years who have not had the opportunity to complete
a satisfactory high school program, who have not completed a substantial amount of
college work, and who, by reason of special attainments, may be prepared to
undertake courses in the university toward a definite and limited objective;
Limited
upper division students with bachelor’s degrees who are not candidates for an
advanced degree or those without bachelor’s degrees who have completed a
substantial amount of college work and who, by reason of special attainments, may
be prepared to undertake certain courses in the university toward a definite and
limited objective;
Postbaccalaureate

education credential.
For tables in this report, undergraduates in the groups above are aggregated into the following categories:
Lower Division
freshmen, sophomores, and special students;
Upper Division

advanced to candidacy.
For enrollment tables in this report, graduate students in the groups above are aggregated into the following
categories:
First Stage
master's and first doctoral students;
43
Second Stage
second doctoral students.
4. Full-time and part-time status of students registered at the University is defined as follows:
