Welcome to COM350L Online!
This course, Sex in the Media, has been designed to enable adult
students to explore the sexualization of our society. This course
explores the prevalence and roles of sexual content in modern
media. We will explore the concepts and debates surrounding the
pervasive presence of sexual themes and content in
communications media. We will investigate the social and
economic forces responsible for the success of sexual media and
the sexualization of mainstream media.
Let's talk about SEX!
While there is no required textbook for this course, I would highly encourage you to
purchase a writing style guide, either APA or MLA, if you don't already
have one. It is a resource that you will utilize throughout your course of
study. If you want to purchase a pocket style guide instead of the full
version, I would recommend:
Hacker, D. & Sommers, N. (2010). A pocket style manual,
(6th ed.). Bedford Books/St. Martin's Press, Inc.
ISBN: 978-0312542542
You will also need some form of word processing software, such as Microsoft Word.
There are also many free word processing applications, such as Google Docs. Since this
course is delivered 100% online, a computer with Internet connectivity is required. If you
live close to the Marist campus, you can utilize the Marist computer labs; however if you
cannot get the campus, you'll need regular access to the Internet to get online.
This course is taught in an online format. Hence, this course will utilize
Marist’s course management system, called iLearn. This system will
provide you 24/7 access to course materials (e.g., syllabus,
presentations, assignments) and individual grades. Although training
will be provided (by Marist), you should have no problem using iLearn
if you know how to use a computer for basic tasks (e.g., writing a paper,
sending email) and have experience casually surfing the web.
Whether this is your first course at Marist, or your first course online, you will have a lot
of support! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at
DrChristinaRoyal@gmail.com or (612) 460-0590 (cell). I'm looking forward to working
with you in this course!
