The LWV was organized with the purpose of educating women on political issues, and encouraging women to exercise their right to vote. In April 1920, the League of Women Voters of Indiana formed from a nucleus of 127 Women's Franchise Leagues in 46 counties; these franchises were part of the American Woman Suffrage Association. The League of Women Voters of Muncie was granted provisional status in 1957, and received its charter in May 1958. The Muncie Women's Civic Council, an outgrowth of the American Association of University Women study group, was instrumental in founding the local LWV. The voter-related projects sponsored by the Muncie Women's Civic Council, including drives to encourage voters to go to the polls, instructional sessions on the use of voting machines, and meetings to introduce local political candidates, fell under the jurisdiction of the LWV of Muncie following its establishment. The first major project undertaken by the LWV of Muncie was the "Know Your Town" survey. This survey was a required first project for all LWV's. Funding for the publication of the LWV of Muncie's "Know Your Town" pamphlet came from the Women's Civic Council treasury, which was turned over to the LWV of Muncie when the council voted to disband in 1958. The pamphlet was dedicated to Mrs. H.A. Jeep, a Women's Civic Council member largely reponsible for organizing the LWV of Muncie. Today the LWV of Muncie continues to work to educate the public on political issues, encourage citizens to vote, and influence public policy. Membership in the LWV is open to women and men of all ages. Scope and Contents This collection includes meeting minutes, correspondence, news clippings, publications, and other materials from the League of Women Voters of Muncie in Muncie, Indiana ranging from 1957 to 1989 regarding the establishment of the Muncie league and its activities, and State of Indiana and National League of Women Voters events and activities.
