Rock, and Ron Williams
Absent: Chris Brown, Caleb Markey, Nancy Parsons
1) Review of Academy and Actions Taken To Date: Joe provided an overview that included:
a) Evaluating the benefits of and applying for Academy participation (July-August 2013);
Steering Team members had previously received copy of the University’s application for
Academy participation.
b) Receiving Commission approval for Academy participation (October 2013). Western is in
the first cohort of 15 participating institutions. The December 2013 Strategic Plan Update
(available at www.wiu.edu/university_planning/planningupdates.php) provides a listing and
demographic comparison of institutional participants
c) Sending an institutional team to the Academy’s Information and Planning Workshop in
Saint Charles, Illinois, (December 2013). Dr. Kristi Mindrup, Assistant Vice President for
Quad Cities and Planning; Angela Bonifas, Associate Director, Institutional Research and
Planning; and Sara Lytle, Assistant Director, Admissions attended a two-day workshop to
learn Academy expectations and protocol.
d) Institutional Research and Planning is leading efforts to preparing a data book of empirical
sources to support future analyses (December 2013-January 2014).
2) Information and Planning Workshop
a) Kristi, Angela Bonifas, and Sara briefed the Steering Team on information learned at the
Information and Planning Workshop.
3) Data Mentor Visit: Mike Wilds from Northeastern (Oklahoma) State University will be on the
Macomb Campus according to the schedule below.

4) How to Structure Our Work
a) We will have a Steering Team, co-chaired by Vice Presidents Biller and Rives. Three
facilitators (Angela Bonifas, Kristi Mindrup, and Sara Lytle) will support the Steering Team
to help ensure that our work remains on schedule.
b) Steering Team members, along with other members of the campus community, will serve on
at least one of three subcommittees or as floaters to assist in subcommittee work.
c) Among our duties, Steering Team members will provide status updates on the
subcommittees and identify opportunities that would benefit from cross subcommittee
collaboration.
5) Subcommittees and Who Else Should be at the Table: Steering Team members volunteered for
subcommittees listed below. Joe will contact suggested members of the campus community
(made by the Steering Team), seek recommendations from the President’s Cabinet, as well as
volunteers from all governance groups on both campuses (Civil Service Employees Council,
Council of Administrative Personnel, Faculty Senate, Quad Cities Faculty Council, and Student
Government Associations-Macomb and Quad Cities), the Alumni Council, and the campus at
large through the January 2014 Strategic Plan Update. Subcommittees will begin their work after
members have been recruited.
a) Macomb Freshmen: Nancy Parsons and Sara Lytle (Co-Chairs), Andy Borst, Gary Biller,
Wendi Mattson, Steve Rock, and Ron Williams. Suggested members of the campus
community, pending their interest and availability, are Katrina Daytner, Jennie Hemingway,
Cheryl Hutchins, Sarah Jewell, David Lane, Michelle Oaks, and Joe Roselieb.
b) Quad Cities Freshmen: Joe Rives, Kristi Mindrup, Angela Bonifas (Co-Chairs), Lindsay
Fender, Angela Lynn. Suggested members of the campus community, pending their interest
and availability, are Bob Andersen, Ryan Colclasure, Alex Hall, Jim Patterson, Bill Pratt,
Tammy Werner, Kenny Wheeler, and Curtis Williams.
c) Distance Learning: Rick Carter, Roger Runquist, and Jennifer Tibbitts (Co-Chairs), Rhonda
Kline, Kristi Mindrup, Padmaja Pillutla, and Joe Rives. Suggested members of the campus
community, pending their interest and availability, are Kim Dodson, John Drea, Anne
Gregory, Hoyet Hemphill, Kris Kelley, Lloyd Kilmer, In Lee, Lea Monahan, Holly Nikels,
and Mandeep Singh.
6) Website Development: Joe, Chris Brown, and Lindsay Fender will meet to design a draft of a
Persistence and Completion Academy Website for Western Illinois University. It will be shared
with and reviewed by the Steering Team before it is launched.
7) Next Meetings: We will schedule our next meetings after our Mentor visit. It may or may not be
after the March 12-14 Academy Roundtable, depending on the outcomes of the Mentor visit,
need for Roundtable preparation, etc. Once more factors are known, we will set up a routine
meeting schedule.
