Helms Academy – Goodwill, in a learning partnership with the Community College of Philadelphia, is now offering FREE courses to help individuals attain their high school diploma while simultaneously earning college credits at the
Dornsife Center. Classes are held from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. To schedule an appointment or for more information about Helms Academy, please call the 2nd BFLC/KEYSPOT Lab at (215) 571-4011.
Music Recording & Production – Want to learn how to make your own music using a high tech software on a computer? Then join us for a class on music recording and production lead by Professor Cyrille Taillander from Drexel

May 10th, 5:30-7:00pm: Cooking with Seasonal Produce from Clark Park Farmer’s Market – Our community chef will pick up some fun and exciting ingredients from the local farmer’s market and create delicious food right
from your very own backyard!

May 17th, 5:30-7:00pm: How to be a Working Parent and Cook Healthy Meals for your Kids – Our community chef will teach you some simple, nutritious and flavor packed recipes so that you can work knowing your children
are eating properly at home.

May 24th, 12:00-1:00pm: How to Creatively Cook for 1 or 2 People? (Senior Luncheon) – Our community chef will offer techniques and recipes that will inspire you to cook creatively for yourself or another person.

May 31st, 5:30-7:00pm: Mauritian Cuisine – Mauritian cuisine is an amazing melting pot of Indian and French flavors that are near and dear to our community chef’s heart…let him share his childhood recipes with you.

Dornsife Senior Group meets every 3rd Friday of each month to discuss how the Dornsife Center can improve its senior program offerings as well as to provide feedback and suggestions.
Dornsife Community Book Club meets every 2nd Friday of each month to discuss the book, Streetwise: Race, Class, and Change in an Urban Community by Elijah Anderson. Limited copies available.
Writers Room at the Dornsife Center is a place for reading, writing, thinking, and being. Here, members of Mantua, Powelton, and Drexel communities creating a shared story. The workshops take place the 1st Tuesday of each month from

Writers Room: Zadie Smith Lecture – Writers Room will have an informal dinner (pizza!) at 5pm before taking a shuttle to hear novelist and essayist Zadie Smith read, talk, and answer questions submitted by the community.
Join us and get your book signed by the author. Dinner will be from 5:00 to 6:00pm on May 5 in the Lindy House followed by heading down the Drexel’s Mandell Theater at 33rd & Chestnut Streets for the lecture at 6:30pm.

Writers Room: Week of Writing Special Workshop – Writers Room will host a community-led workshop that will flip the script on the workshop on May 10 from 3:00 to 6:00pm. Week of Writing participants will get a
workshop designed by attendess for attendees. You won’t want to miss this. You won’t want to miss what you’ll make. Reception to follow.

Writers Room Hours – Drop-by the Lindy Center on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 1:00 to 3:00pm to talk to Kirsten or Rachel about writing you’re doing or writing you’d like to do.
Side-by-Side Class is a one of Drexel’s formats for community-based learning coursework. Half of the course participants are Drexel students and half are members of the community that learn together as colleagues each week in a 10 week
term. Community members can take the courses FREE of charge and those that complete the course leave with new skills for their resume as well as a Drexel course completion certificate. There will be 3 classes offered this Spring 2016 West Philly Enterprises: Launching a Locally Integral, Nationally Significant, Sustainable Business, History of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Stories. These classes are full, but please stay tuned for more information about our upcoming SideBy-Side courses in the Summer term starting in June 2016.

The Sky in the City – Astronomy Night at the Dornsife Center – Community members of all ages are invited to learn more about how astronomy works and about what features in space we can see from Philadelphia. Everyone gets a

Quilting Bee – Join us at the Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships for a quilt-making workshop. Lauren Altman, a Drexel Music Industry Senior, will lead this workshop. She owns and operates D6 Merchandise, and created this
workshop in order to repurpose unsold t-shirts into something more meaningful. Very much in the spirit of a traditional quilting bee, this event will allow people to come together through the tactile experience of cutting, stabilizing and
arranging the cloth. Members of the Drexel and West Philadelphia communities will place their pieces next to each other to make a quilt to be donated to the shelter or charity of their choosing. Participants will meet at the Dornsife Center’s
Ryan Hall at 10am for morning refreshments, and we will begin the workshop around 10:30am. No prior sewing experience needed. Seats for the workshop are limited. Please RSVP by Monday, May 16th to dornsife@drexel.edu
The Privilege of Aging Workshops – Aging is often thought of as a negative process, however there are important benefits that are largely uncelebrated. We will explore the privilege of aging and ways to do it well through a series of
presentations by Drexel Students. Through the workshops, we will understand:

the basic underlying structure and function of selected organ systems

the basics of the normal changes associated with the process of aging in these organ systems

that aging is a privilege and that we should be respect the privilege we have been given by being careful to protect ourselves through the process

the basics of the ways we can protect our privilege
