organization that is complex, but simple, and provides "Everything You
Need." This report of our achieves will verify our claim.
The 1997-98 fiscal year for the Ball State University Alumni
Association was both challenging and exciting. As I reflect upon the
projects, activities, and events undertaken by the volunteers and staff of
the BSUAA, I am pleased to report that all were accomplished with
quality, enthusiasm, and a focus on tradition.
This document, our fifth public annual report, presents a detailed and
graphic summary of our work of the past fiscal year.
Alumni Association activities included our third Alumni College on
campus and expanded regional activities in Washington, D.C.; Detroit,
Michigan; Huntington, West Virginia; New Castle, Huntington, and
Peru, Indiana; Nashville, Tennessee; and San Antonio, Texas. Service
Partnerships were enhanced with First USA, our affinity credit card
program, and American Insurance Administrators (AIA), our GradMed
and Grad Gift Life provider. Our World Wide Web homepage was
enhanced and updated and now includes each issue of the Ball State
Alumnus magazine, an online alumni registry, an alumni locator service, alumni class notes online, an
alumni quiz, a campus photo tour, and the "fight song."
Our strategic planning committee conducted surveys to determine initiatives and recommend direction for
the future. An outgrowth of the committee's work is the expansion of the Ball State Alumnus magazine by
eight pages, beginning with the July, 1998 issue. The pages will regularly include a philanthropy and an
alumni outreach section. Those pages will help to keep our alumni better informed on the ever-expanding
opportunities available at this university. Meanwhile, the magazine reached a milestone in May, as
circulation figures rose to 100,284.
The most visible accomplishment at the university was the completion of the Alumni Center. All
operational activities of the Alumni Association are now housed in the Center. During three weeks of
opening festivities last spring, more than 3,261 alumni visited the new Center.
The rich tradition of our alumni volunteer leaders has been preserved and enhanced during this year.
Excellent leadership was provided by J. Robert Browning, Jr., 1997 Ball State University Alumni
Association President, and Allen L. Williams, 1998 President.
The Ball State University Alumni Association and our programs have benefited from he support and
encouragement of the Ball State University Foundation and University administration, particularly
University President John E. Worthen and Vice President for University Advancement Don L. Park.
Thank you for your continued interest and investment in Ball State University and our Alumni
Association.
Happy Days!

Alumni Center
Late November marked the completion of the Alumni Center and the arrival of its first tennants,
University Foundation. The remaining three offices, University Development, Advancement Services, and
the Alumni Association, moved in subsequently, with the Alumni Association relocating from McKinley
Avenue in January.
The $7.5-million structure was financed entirely by
donations raised by thousands of alumni and friends
of the University. The two-story building's intent is
to keep alumni in contact with the University and
bring them back to their Alma Mater for various
activities such as Homecoming.
The 50,000-square-foot signature building was
designed by Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners from New
York. Highlights of the building include a 47-foot
glass conservatory and a six-sided assembly hall that
will seat up to 304 banquet guests or 486 theater
style.
During a three-week period from April 17, 1998 to
Commencement on May 9, 1998, more than 3,200
alumni and friends toured the Center for the Grand Opening Celebration. The celebration consisted of
dinners and receptions for various groups.
Alumni Clubs
Alumni clubs serve areas where there are significant numbers of Ball State University alumni. Alumni
club volunteers organize opportunities for alumni and the University to continue an important relationship
that is of mutual benefit. The activities organized by the alumni club board of governors include golf and
dinner outings, continuing professional educational seminars, receptions and dinners for university
representatives, social functions such as picnic and baseball games, casino nights, TGIF's, and pre-athletic
events. Alumni club members also work with the Office of Admissions at annual receptions for
prospective students.

Alumni clubs continued to improve and refine existing outings and look for new ways to involve alumni
through activities. The Northeastern Indiana and the Greater Indianapolis area alumni clubs developed
picnic and baseball outings which involved the entire family. The Michiana Club organized bus trips to
take advantage of the new casino boats in northwestern Indiana. The Adams Wells Alumni Club continues
to provide an alumni and community golf and bridge outing.

Alumni Publications
The Alumni Association communications staff produced the bi-monthly Ball State Alumnus magazine in
addition to approximately 200 other projects for the Association's expanding programs during the 1997-98
fiscal year.
The 32-page Alumnus reached a milestone with the May 1998 issue, as circulation topped 100,000. The
Association's ever-expanding efforts also prompted the decision to increase the size of the magazine
beginning with the July 1998 issue. An additional eight pages per issue will include a section on
philanthropy and pages that will highlight other areas of outreach at the university, to include continuing
education, admissions, career services, and others. The increase in the magazine's size also enabled
approval of a new part-time Alumnus assistant position.
Editor and director of communications Charlotte Shepperd was assisted by Alumnus assistant Sherri Beaty
and five student assistants: graduate students Dawn Krause, MA98, and Nicholas Paulenich, MA98; and
undergraduates Andrew Brown, Lori Pfister, and Christopher Trice, '98.
Alumni Association Calendar
A full-color calendar was produced for the tenth consecutive year. Five-thousand copies were printed and
mailed to friends and major donors of the University.
Photographs were taken by Ball State University Photographic Services and reflected activities, people,
landscaping, and architecture that represent Ball State University.
Alumni Recreation Privileges
All active members of the Alumni Association can purchase a BSU recreational pass for their spouses,
children, and themselves (currently $100 per year). The pass provides access to Ball State's exercise
rooms, weight rooms, indoor pools, racquetball courts, and locker and shower facilities. The office of
Recreational Facilities provided 482 passes including: 138 alumni; 197 spouses of alumni; and 247
dependents of alumni.

Career Services
During the past year, effort went into developing, expanding, and promoting career services for alumni.
The staff identified several key areas that continued to be the focus of our efforts to provide career-related
services to alumni. Areas included: networking, resume help, interviewing, career change, career
information, job openings, and continuing education.
Development of the website continued to be a top priority. Alumni will be able to access our Career
Alumni Resources (C.A.R.) in the later part of the year. One part of the Career Alumni Resources is the
Career Alumni Network (C.A.N.), which will also be on-line, enabling alumni to network with other Ball
State alumni electronically. hey will be able to search for alumni volunteers by geographical location, job
title, industry, or keyword. Other plans include implementing workshops on career issues, posting junior
level job openings and resumes of alumni on the Internet, and offering continuing education courses for
those in professions where it is required.
The Alumni Association co-sponsored the following programs during the past year:

an alumni directory for those registered, BSUAA postcard, several listserv groups, Greek alumni
resources, history of BSUAA, BSUAA affinity credit card, campus photo tour, class notes, and alumni
chat.
Links were created for St.A.R.T (Student Alumni Relations Team), Continuing Education, Greek
organizations represented at BSU, and a special page for each BSUAA alumni event. As of June 1998,
over 650 alumni have registered on-line through our alumni registry.
Insurance Program
During fiscal year 1997-98, the BSUAA announced a partnership with American
Insurance Administrators (AIA). AIA is based in Columbus, OH, and provides
insurance programs to more than 60 alumni associations throughout the country.
The three programs available to alumni and their families include GradMed,
Graduate Gift Life Policy, and Alumni Life Plan.
GradMed is short-term, comprehensive major medical insurance available for
periods of 60-180 days. The rates are based on age, gender, and geographic area.
Information is sent to graduates a few weeks prior to the May, July, and
December graduation dates. Finalized response percentages were: May
1997--5.3%; July 1997--2.49%; and December 1997--5.0%.
The Graduate Gift Life Policy is a $10,000 term life policy that is offered as a
graduation gift from the BSUAA. There is no cost to the graduate and the policy
is effective for six months from graduation day. After the six-month coverage,
the policy can be renewed for low group rates on a monthly basis paid by the
alumnus. Finalized gift acceptance percentages were: May 1997--13.8%; July
1997--8.3%; and December 1997--14.6%.
The third program available is the Alumni Life Plan. All alumni under age 60 are
eligible to apply for the term life insurance for up to $150,000 of life insurance. In March, 71,278 offers
were mailed; 120 applications received; and 58 current policies in effect.
New Graduate Mailer
The BSUAA New Graduate Mailer was designed to familiarize new graduates with the Ball State
University Alumni Association and the programs offered to all alumni upon graduation.
Prior to graduation a mailer is sent to all seniors who have applied to graduate for that particular
graduation date. Included in the mailer is a brochure that briefly describes some of the BSUAA programs
and services, alumni statistics, important BSU phone numbers, and alumni contacts throughout the
country.
Also inserted in the mailer are a license plate application, an alumni file form, a BSUAA decal, and an
address label form. Graduates are encouraged to fill out and mail the alumni file form back and they
receive a free gift in return.
Last year, 3009 mailers were sent and 421 returned which yielded a 14% return rate.

and programs. Furthermore, a more extensive survey
was mailed randomly to obtain feedback on how the
BSUAA can better plan for future programming.
Results were calculated and revisions were established.
