HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY Site Council Meeting Monday, January 11, 2016 3:30 p.m. Site Council Members: Lauren Albers, Tracie Bosch, Theresa Granger, Myles Knutson, Stacy Kronberg, DeeDee Melander, Sara-Lynn Nash, Karla Neuenschwander, Pam Paulsen, Sharon Sutliff & Chad Ryburn AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION ACTION Welcome & Review of Minutes Parent Forum Moving and Learning Residency Grant This year, HL was awarded a Moving & Learning Grant where we have Kaye Standke, a Yoga Calm Instructor coming in Kay Standke for six weeks to present in four of HL’s classrooms. Kaye will model the breathing ball, stillness & self-regulation. Art to Remember Fundraiser Linda has worked with Art to Remember for a number of years. Last year, she worked Linda Hansen with 3rd grade only where student art is transferred onto various items that parents can purchase if they wish. The finished products are delivered to HL in early May just in time for Mother’s Day. School Start Time Discussion questions for Site Council Discussion meetings: • Elementary parents: What do you believe are the earliest and latest times elementary-age children should be walking to/from school or waiting at a bus stop? AM: Earliest 7:40, latest 9:25 PM: Latest 3:45 • All parents: What would you like the administration to consider during the school start time discussion? -Car accidents involving HS students, -Accommodationsstudents consuming caffeine drinks in the AM -Impact of latchkey kids with later start (study all kids K-12) -Start of evening activities (sports, church, dance, etc.) Site Council agreed that Linda should continue working with just 3rd grade on this fundraiser. --Some kids have jobs (not optional) - Appointments (dental, ortho, etc.) - Breakfast program - Parents’ work schedules - SAC-are kids ready for academics after 3-4 hours of SAC in AM? - What will SAC be impacted? Start & end times? - Possibility of more open enrollment across the district • Bond Updates All parents: Any changes to bus schedules would likely result in increased transportation costs. What budget cuts would you propose to offset increased transportation costs? - How about the revenue from high school permit parking? - Can the number of HS buses be decreased? What is the percentage of kids being bussed? - No elimination of art or music programs Chad presented the construction & implementation schedule for district schools. Highland: Ceiling tile work-Summer 2016 Start upgrading security–Fall 2016 Safety enhancements-entrance modifications Spring or Fall 2017. New elementary school completed by Fall 2017 – 3 sites now being considered. Future possible fundraisers: Shoperoo (phone app) – Scan your receipts within two weeks of purchase & rack up points/cash for Highland. Red Robin Loyalty Card – Just sign up & your school gets a kickback. Potato/Salad/Soup Bar by Las Tortillas for Winter Teacher Appreciation Dinner. Letters will be sent to parents requesting just monetary donations, no water/pop or desserts. See attached. Next Meeting Monday, March 14th At next Assessments in August, give parents a form requesting donations for the entire year for the two Teacher Appreciation Dinners (Fall, Winter). Possibility of a Volunteer Appreciation Event
