The Alumni Center provided a welcoming first view of campus, but more importantly, it was a
fully equipped conference, reception, and event center available for use by the areas of
University Advancement as well as university administration, faculty, and staff.
The Alumni Center, home of the Alumni Association, University Development, the University
Foundation, and Advancement Services, provided space and equipment for 537 events during
the 2002-03 fiscal year, with 39,396 people attending.
Since the facility opened nearly six years ago, 182,807 individuals had attended one of the
3,161 events in the building.

ADMISSIONS RECRUITMENT
Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team
Alumni/Admission Partnership
The Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team (CART) was a network of alumni volunteers from
around the world who assisted in recruiting students for Ball State University. The mission of
the CART program was to identify, recruit, and retain quality students for Ball State
University. Formed in 1999 as a cooperative effort between the Alumni Association and the
Office of Admissions, CART included a membership of more than 75 alumni in 14 states and
two countries. CART School Advocates were Indiana high school teachers who served as Ball
State ambassadors to assist in fostering communication between students within their schools
and Ball State.
During fiscal year 2002-03, CART members represented Ball State at college fairs in West
Lafayette, Indianapolis, and Pendleton. They also referred students to Ball State University
and distributed BSU and scholarship information to students at area high schools. On August
11, 2002 CART Member Mary Harcourt, '79MAE82, opened her home to host a send-off party
for entering freshmen from Rush and Fayette Counties. CART members also assisted
prospective students in setting up visits to the Ball State campus.
The Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team awarded ten $500 scholarships to incoming freshmen
at Ball State. Recipients of the CART scholarships for the 2002-03 academic year were: Carla
Alderman, Indianapolis, Bishop Chatard High School; Megan Alderman, Indianapolis, Bishop

Alumni Legacy Scholarship
The children and grandchildren of alumni who were active members of the Alumni Association
applied for the Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship. These one-time, non-renewable annual
awards were given by the Alumni Association to show appreciation to those alumni who have
contributed to the enrichment and growth of Ball State University. The first Alumni
Association Legacy scholarships were given in 1983 and since that time, 515 students have
been awarded a total of $617,000.
For the 2002-03 academic year, 46 scholarships were awarded at $1,600 each. For a listing of
the 2002 recipients, their parents and/or grandparents, and hometowns, see the Awards and
Scholarships section of this report.
Cardinal Legacy Award
Cardinal Legacy Awards were first given in 1999 to assist in the recruitment of out-of-state
legacies. Children and grandchildren of Ball State alumni were eligible for the award which
provided a tuition waiver of $1,250 per semester for up to eight semesters. Students
receiving the award must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to remain eligible. Since
the awards inception, 42 out-of-state students have been awarded the Cardinal Legacy Award.

Tasting; and shopped during the annual Bus Shopping Trip to Chicago. In addition, they still
coordinated the long-established Casino Night and golf and dinner outing which had a change
of location to the Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend.
ALUMNI ID
The Alumni ID served as a multipurpose photo ID card for the 2,268 alumni and friends of the
university who have obtained a card through the Alumni Association. The card had many
uses, including serving as a discount card, library card, and recreational facilities card (with
annual fee).

produced. Admission was permitted to Ball State's exercise and weight rooms, indoor pools,
racquetball courts, and locker and shower facilities.

At the end of the fiscal year, there were 6,950 active accounts and the total revenue earned
against the upfront monetary advance per the contract was $143,350.94.
CARDINAL CORNER, INC.
Cardinal Corner, Inc. was established in 1982 and its primary mission was to provide alumni
and friends living outside the state of Indiana with the means of buying merchandise
imprinted with the Ball State University logo.

the operating balance was $121,054.20.
CAREER SERVICES
The Alumni Association continued to sponsor career fairs that were coordinated by the Career
Center and hosted on campus at Worthen Arena.

plated for a cost of $25 per year in addition to standard registration fees.
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP
The Alumni Association extended its partnership with the Ball State Federal Credit Union for
18 months to conclude June 30, 2004. The goal of the association was to provide quality
services to its alumni and their families and to enhance support from the corporate
community for the BSUAA. The goal of the BSFCU was to provide quality financial services to
Ball State alumni.
As a corporate sponsor, the BSFCU had its logo/name recognition on BSUAA-generated and
printed items, the Alumni Association's Web site, and verbal acknowledgement at appropriate
association-sponsored events. The BSFCU sponsored four golf outings and at least two other
events, in addition to the multiple Homecoming events, during the 18-month agreement.
GREEK OUTREACH
The Ball State Alumni Association took an active role in the planning and preparation of many
activities and events for Greek-affiliated groups during the year. The groups utilized our
resources to extend newsletters, publications, and brochures via U.S. Mail and also via
electronic mail. This helped to keep alumni up-to-date and invite them to events such as golf
outings, Homecoming, and reunions.

HOMECOMING
Homecoming was a time for alumni, students, and the entire Ball State and Muncie
communities to celebrate their alma mater and show their Cardinal pride. The theme for
Homecoming 2002 was "Movin’ On Up" and Ball State played and defeated the Eastern
Michigan Eagles, 42-17.
The week’s activities included traditional events such as Opening Day Ceremonies, including a
Pep Rally, Air Jam, Bed Race, Talent Search, and the Parade. Other events included a Foam
Party, a Faculty/Staff Reception, Faculty/Staff Breakfast, and the annual Alumni Awards
Dinner.
Rob Tyler and Terry Whitt Bailey were crowned the inaugural faculty/staff king and queen and
undergraduates Nathan Brown and Kathy Spenos were crowned as the 2002 Homecoming
king and queen.
The 2002 annual Alumni Awards Dinner honored Distinguished Alumni, Benny Award
recipients, G.O.L.D. Award recipients, the Alumni Association past president, and the Robert
E. Linson Scholarship winner.
There were 17 students who served on the Homecoming Steering Committee, led by Ben
Csikos as general chair. Other committee members were: Jeff Duerstock; Meghan Folgate;
Kasey Fowler; Ali Hart; Cory Isom, '03; Josh Kumfer, '03; Courtney Lyman; Sean Reilly; Traci
Reynolds; Justin Syndram; Ben Tietz; Carly Whittern; Josh Wilson, '03; Jennifer Witman; and
Nick Zuniga. Ed Shipley, '68MA71, was the Homecoming sponsor; Andrea Deer, '95, was
faculty advisor; and Diane Williams was the assistant advisor.
iALUMNI CONTACTS
The BSUAA has been tracking communication via technology since August 2001. When an email was received, the type of question or requested information was documented. By
learning communication preferences, the Association was able to better serve alumni.
Examples of categories recorded this year included: 285 changes of address; 140 Cardinal
Corner, Inc. orders; 603 event reservations; 895 requests for alumni information; and 399
Alumnus Class Note entries.
The BSUAA received 4,585 contacts via e-mail during the fiscal year.
iALUMNI RELATIONS
During the calendar year 2002, the BSUAA enhanced services to alumni and increased alumni
involvement with the university by adopting an iAlumni Relations mentality. This involved
Internet-driven integration, independence, information, individualization, and innovation.
The BSUAA continued to establish and expand partnerships with business, education, campus,

and community organizations to enrich relationships with individual alumni and increase
alumni participation. The Alumni Association represented the unifying link between the
university's present and past.
BSUAA Web Site
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The method of communicating with our alumni continued to be the utilization of technology.
NEWS from the Cardinal’s Nest, the Alumni Association e-newsletter, was sent monthly to an
average of 21,813 alumni. The newsletter contained information about Ball State, Career
Resources, and the Alumni Association.
E-mail messages about Alumni Association events and programs were sent to alumni and
friends weekly. The Alumni Association also sent Ball State related e-mail messages to alumni
from other departments on campus and assisted departments who chose to send electronic
newsletters instead of printed bulletins to their alumni.
Updating the Alumni Association Web site was a priority for the technology staff. The design
of the Web site was enhanced with new graphics and navigability. Areas of the Web site
browsed frequently included the Alumni Registry/E-mail Directory (8,843 participants), the
Alumni Locator Service, Upcoming Events, Photo Album, and Programs and Services.
The contents of the Web site increased, namely with the addition of the Cardinal Football
Alliance pages. With the formation of the Cardinal Football Alliance, a new alumni constituent
society, football alumni were able to enter through the Alumni Registry to view names and
contact information for other football lettermen alumni.
INSURANCE PROGRAM
The BSUAA continued its partnership with American Insurance Administrators (AIA). AIA
provided insurance opportunities to more than 270 college and university alumni associations
during fiscal year 2003-03. Since 1978, AIA has been marketing and administering insurance
plans specially designed for graduating students and alumni.
The three programs that the BSUAA offered to alumni and their families were: GradMed,
short-term medical insurance; GradGift, free life insurance to new graduates; and
AlumniTerm, life insurance for alumni.

NEW GRADUATE MAILING
The new graduate mailing continued to be a marketing tool for the Alumni Association to
recent graduates.
The mailing consisted of a welcome letter from Executive Director Ed Shipley; information on
the Alumni Association and what it provides to all alumni upon graduation; campus contact
numbers; a BSU window decal; a complimentary BSU affinity license plate form; and a free
address return label offer with a returned information file form.
During the fiscal year, a total of 4,239 packets were mailed, 481 information file forms were
returned, for an 11% conversion rate. In addition, 57 complimentary BSU license plate offers
were accepted.
ONLINE TRAINING
Thirty-three alumni took advantage of the ExecuTrain Virtual Campus learning service that is
offered at a reduced rate through Ball State's Center for Organizational Resources.
Courses covering a wide range of topics were available to participants at times to fit their
schedules. Topics available included office productivity, design media, computer professional,
and business management courses.
ExecuTrain’s self-study courses were available for a period of one year and accessible to
participants. Two options for course study were offered. More than 347 courses were
available in option one for $69 while option two included the 500-plus office productivity,
design media, and computer professional courses for $199.
Sixty-six courses were featured in the Harvard Business Management Skills series that
contained topics ranging from improving customer service and managing projects to finance
and change management for $159.
PUBLICATIONS
The Alumni Association communications staff completed a busy fiscal year, producing six
issues of the Ball State Alumnus and more than 200 other print projects that publicized and
supported the diverse activities coordinated by the Alumni Association.
The 40-page, plus cover, Alumnus magazine was circulated to an average of 115,860
households throughout the year. In the magazine, the staff included editorial material that
supported the Association's mission of keeping alumni and other university constituents
informed about campus events, alumni activities, current issues, and news of the growing
alumni base. The magazine was printed by Sport Graphics in Indianapolis. Graphic services
were provided by C.S. Kern in Muncie.
The annual full-color calendar, featuring campus scenes and distributed to major donors and
friends of the university, was published in December 2002. Images were produced by Ball
State’s Photo Services and printing was completed on-campus by Ball State’s Printing
Services.
In March, the Communications Advisory Board convened on campus to review the magazine
and provide editorial and graphic direction to the communications staff for future magazine
production. As the fiscal year concluded, the magazine experienced budget challenges for the
2003-04 year that resulted in decisions to modify the weight of paper, number of pages, and
publication format, enabling the six-issue frequency to be maintained.
Members of the communications staff included: Charlotte Shepperd, '68MA75, director; Sara
Billups, Angela Parker, ’92, and Denise Greer, ’00, Alumnus assistants; Ryan Falquist,
graduate assistant; and Andrea Paul, Laurel Peffer, and David Westbrook, undergraduate
assistants.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS
BALL BUILDING APPRECIATION EVENT
Thirty-nine alumni who worked in the E.F. Ball Building on campus gathered for a "sneak
preview" tour of structure renovations and an appreciation luncheon. The event was cosponsored by the Alumni Association and the Department of Telecommunications on April 1.
BALL STATE'S FAMILY FOR FREEDOM
In an effort to support and encourage U.S. military troops engaged in fighting the war on
terrorism in the Persian Gulf region, the Alumni Association began working on a special
project in April 2003 called "Ball State University's Family For Freedom."
The main goal of Ball State University's Family For Freedom was to recognize the Ball State
family, including students, alumni, and BSU employees, who were on active duty. It was
decided that the Alumni Association would display their names, ranks, and branches of
service in the Conservatory of the Alumni Center.
At the close of the fiscal year, 55 names of service men and women who belong to the Ball
State family were listed on the display. A page on the Alumni Association Web site is devoted
to Ball State University's Family For Freedom at www.bsu.edu/alumni/onlinecommunity/
freedom/ and military personnel were honored in the Alumnus magazine.
BUILDING BETTER COMMUNITIES TOUR
A series of receptions took place during President Blaine Brownell's tour of 16 cities across the
state, as part of the Building Better Communities initiative. The campaign was designed to
inform alumni, friends, and community leaders about ways the university could partner in
promoting the welfare of Indiana.
September 9, 63 alumni and guests attended a cocktail reception at the Fort Wayne Country
Club as part of the tour. President Brownell and Intercollegiate Athletics Director Bubba
Cunningham were on hand to greet guests and update them on the continuing enhancement
of Ball State and its programs.

ENTREPRENEUR'S ALLIANCE MEETING AND DINNER
The Ball State University Alumni Association sponsored a dinner featuring Wil Davis, ’75, cofounder and president of Ontario Systems, at the Entrepreneur’s Alliance of Indiana meeting
on May 8, 2003. His topic, "High Performance Leadership: Creating a Culture of Excellence!"
focused on the work culture at Ontario Systems, a leading provider of receivables
management solutions and the largest software development firm in Indiana.
Tom and Linda Farris painted and dressed the Alumni Association's Garfield with the theme "I Graduated: Big, Fat,
Hairy Deal!"
GARFIELD'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
In honor of Garfield’s 25th birthday, the community of Muncie joined in a three-day "Birthday
Bash" for the furry feline. The Alumni Association participated by purchasing one of 25, fourand-a-half-foot sculptures of Garfield to artistically design and dress for the occasion. The
sculptures were displayed throughout the community, and were assembled once during the
festivities, at the Fur Ball hosted in the Convention Center.
Ball State alumni Tom and Linda Farris painted and dressed the Alumni Association’s Garfield,
with the theme "The Graduate," and the tag line, "I Graduated: Big, Fat, Hairy Deal!"
Alumnus Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, signed the cat, as did the Farrises.
After the three-day celebration, June 19-21, organizations were entitled to keep their cats, or
offer them for auction, ultimately via E-bay. The Alumni Association opted to keep its Garfield
on display in the Alumni Center for visitors to enjoy as they come to the Association's home.
