STRATEGIC PLAN
The Ball State University Alumni Association staff
responded to a request from President Brownell to develop
strategies that will support the university's strategic plan.
The outcome was the following:
Vision
The BSUAA will be a model alumni association on the
national level.
Mission
The Ball State University Alumni Association, an
interdependent organization of the university, exists to
foster and fully realize the ideals and mission of the
university. The Alumni Association encourages loyalty,
participation, and support of the university by informing
alumni of the achievements and needs of their alma mater.
The Alumni Association advances the university throughout the world and unites all alumni in closer
bonds of education, fellowship, tradition, and mutual assistance.
Motto
To be an advocate for alumni, to enrich their lives, and involve them with Ball State University.
Goals 2001-2006
1. Accepting the fact that the BSUAA currently offers a wide range of diverse activities and programs:
We will expand alumni participation in existing activities and events and increase visibility through
targeted publications. We will focus on quality rather than quantity of events and communication.
A. We will measure the number of alumni attending events.
B. We will evaluate alumni response via surveys and focus groups.
2. We will enhance services to alumni and their involvement with the university by incorporating an
iAlumni Relations mentality. This will involve Internet-driven integration, independence,
information, individualization, and innovation.
A. We will annually summarize and compare the number of alumni contacts via the Internet,
e-mail, e-newsletters, push e-mail, alumni1@bsu.edu contacts, and alumni Internet registry
participation.
B. We will evaluate the quality and quantity of information delivered to alumni via surveys,
individual contact, and focus groups.
3. We will establish and expand partnerships with business, education, campus, and community
organizations, to enrich our relationships with individual alumni and increase our alumni
participation.
A. We will count the number of partnerships.
B. We will evaluate the quality and quantity of alumni participation that develops as a result of
the partnerships.
4. We will evaluate appropriate data and alumni feedback on the work of the Alumni Association
through extensive surveys and alumni focus groups.

ALUMNI CENTER
The Alumni Center, which is situated on the corner of Tillotson and Bethel avenues, played an integral
part in the development of relationships with alumni and friends of the university. It served as the hosting
place for many events and was the home to many alumni.
The Alumni Center provided office space for the Alumni Association, University Development,
University Foundation, and Advancement Services. Since the facility opened nearly five years ago,
143,411 individuals had attended an event in the building through fiscal year 2001-02.
The BSUAA continued to be the number-one user of the facility and utilized the Alumni Center 108 times
for events, bringing in 6,060 guests during the 2001-02 fiscal year.
ALUMNI COLLEGE
The seventh annual Alumni College was hosted on campus June 14-15 and included a multitude of

activities.
Kicking off the two-day event on Friday was a casino night during which guests played blackjack,
roulette, craps, and poker with play money. Each participant was eligible to win a gift in the prize drawing
at the end of the night.
Saturday's schedule began with Classes without Quizzes that included topics such as Herb Gardening, the
Cracker Jack History, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and Living in a Muslim World. There
were also building tours. Al Rent, '67, Director of University Marketing, gave a presentation that focused
on marketing efforts at BSU. He included clips from the Late Show with David Letterman and some of the
current BSU commercials.
Alumni College ended at the Quadrangle with a picnic and concert at the annual Symphony on the Green
concert by the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. More than 200 Alumni College guests and BSU faculty
emeriti attended the event.
Alumni College presenters were: Ed Cox; Tom Farris, '67; Linda Farris, '67; Shannon Griffith, '91MA97;
Kathy Johnson; Kevin Kenyon; Larry and Shirley Osborn; Jason Reynolds; Michael Van Horn, '97; and
Allen White.
ADMISSIONS RECRUITMENT
Prospective Student Receptions
Alumni volunteers served as Ball State University ambassadors at
fall receptions in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne, and
mini-receptions in Richmond, South Bend, Lawrenceburg, and
Evansville. The Office of Admissions geared its receptions toward
the needs of high school seniors, providing them with information
about the academic programs and services offered at Ball State. A
total of 20 alumni volunteers staffed registration tables and
welcomed parents and students to the receptions. A list of the fiscal
year's admissions receptions is included in the past activities section
of this report.
Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team Alumni/Admissions Partnership
The Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team (CART) is a network of alumni volunteers from around the world
who assist Ball State University with student recruitment. The mission of the CART program is to
identify, recruit, and retain quality students for Ball State University. Formed in 1999 as a cooperative
effort between the Alumni Association and the Office of Admissions, the CART program has grown each
year and in the fiscal year included more than 70 members in 14 states and two countries outside of the
United States. CART School Advocates are Indiana high school teachers who serve as Ball State
ambassadors to assist in fostering communication between students within their schools and Ball State.
During the year, CART members worked at admissions receptions, served as BSU representatives on
discussion panels at Indiana high schools and college fairs, hosted a college admissions and costs night for
Ball State legacies and their families, referred students to Ball State University, and distributed scholarship
information to students. On February 2, CART members hosted a bus trip bringing 123 prospective
students from Indianapolis, Gary, and Chicago to campus for the day. Students were served lunch,
received admissions and financial aid information, had a question-and-answer session with a current BSU
student from their area, met with counselors, and attended a Ball State basketball game.
CART awarded ten $500 scholarships to incoming freshmen. The following students received scholarships
for the 2001-02 academic year: Brandon Scott Bangel, Indianapolis, Decatur Central High School; Gina
Marie Bowman, Bluffton, Bluffton High School; Sarah Beth Harris, Bluffton, Bluffton High School;
Jamie Lin Hooley, Kendallville, East Noble High School; Jessica Lynn Knuth, Plainfield, Plainfield High
School; Nicole Linn Pett, Bluffton, Bluffton High School; Brian Edward Scherrer, Muncie, Muncie
Central High School; Lindsey Leffler Townsend, St. Paul, North Decatur High School; Daniel Joseph
Vaughn, Muncie, Delta High School; and Erin Marie Lea Whitacre, Indianapolis, Covenant Christian High
School.
Alumni Legacy Scholarship
Alumni Association Legacy Scholarships were available to the children and grandchildren of alumni who
are active members of the Alumni Association. The annual awards were given by the Alumni Council to
show appreciation to those alumni who have contributed to the enrichment and growth of Ball State
University. The scholarships are one-time, nonrenewable awards. The first Alumni Association Legacy
scholarships were given in 1983 and since that time 462 students have been awarded a total of $533,000

through this scholarship.
For the 2001-02 academic year, 40 scholarships were awarded at $2,000 each. For a listing of the 2001
recipients, their parents and/or grandparents, and hometowns, see the Awards and Scholarships section of
this report.
Cardinal Legacy Award
In 1999, the Alumni Association instituted the Cardinal Legacy Award to assist in the recruitment of
out-of-state legacies. Children and grandchildren of Ball State alumni were eligible for the 2001-02 award
that provided a tuition waiver of $1,250 per semester for up to eight semesters. Students who received the
award were required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to remain eligible.
ALUMNI ACTIVITIES
Indiana Alumni Clubs
Alumni Clubs serve geographic areas where there are significant
numbers of Ball State alumni. Club volunteers organize educational
and social activities for alumni and university friends throughout the
year. These activities are designed to develop new and enhance
current relationships with alumni.
The activities organized by club boards during the past fiscal year
included golf and dinner outings, continuing professional educational
seminars, receptions and dinners for university representatives, social
functions such as holiday bus shopping trips, family zoo outings,
picnic and baseball games, casino nights, TGIFs, hockey games, and
pre-athletic events.
Alumni Clubs continued to improve existing activities and looked for
new and exciting ways to involve more alumni and friends of Ball
State. The Greater Indianapolis Area Alumni Club continued to
expand the number of activity opportunities available to area alumni. New in the past year was a Ball State
casino night at Jillians. The Alumni Club of Northeastern Indiana continued to offer the well-attended golf
and dinner outing, the winter TGIF outing, and a Three Rivers Parade entry with Charlie Cardinal and the
Ball State Cheerleaders. The Michiana Alumni Club added a wine-tasting evening at the S. Ray Miller
Auto Museum chaired by Vince Von Der Vellen, '87, that was voted best new outing for the year. The
Adams Wells Alumni Club offered area alumni and friends a golf and dinner outing and had plans
underway for additional activities for next year. The club and area alumni mourn the passing of Don Rush,
'59MA64, a long-time board member and club vice president.

Annual Report: Alumni Programs
ALUMNI ID
The multi-functional Alumni ID remained an asset to alumni and served as a photo identification card,
discount card (C.A.R.D.-Cardinal Alumni Retail Discount), library card, and Rec Card. At the end of the
fiscal year 2001-02, 2,184 cards were issued. The Alumni ID was established in 1998. The following are
various ways the Alumni ID was used:
Discount Card
The C.A.R.D. (Cardinal Alumni Retail Discount) program was established in 1999. The discount program
utilized the photo Alumni ID that allowed cardholders to receive discounts at area merchants. This fiscal
year, the BSUAA had 37 participating vendors that offered various discounts.
The following merchants participated in the C.A.R.D. program in 2002: A Place to Tan, American Dry
Cleaners, ArtWorks Gallery, B&B/Kirks Bike Shop, Batteries Plus, Best Western-Muncie, Blue Bottle
Coffee Shop, BW-3s, Classroom Connection, Crestview Golf Course, DJs Golf, Danner's Books,
Domino's Pizza, Everlasting Photography, Framemakers, French Tex Cleaners, Holiday Inn Express,
Hotheads Hair Design Team, Incredible Yogurt, KFC, Kinko's, The Locker Room, Mulligan's Lounge,
Paul's Flower and Gift Shop, Pazol's Jewelers, Pete's Duck Inn, The Players Club, Rosie's Custom Frames,
Scotty's Brewhouse, Slick Track Raceway, Stadium Marathon, Standt's Fine Jewelry, Sylvan Learning
Center, Szechuan Garden, Ultra Image Suntanning, and Vogue Cleaners.
Library Card
The Alumni ID permitted usage of resources at University Libraries to active members of the Alumni
Association. In addition, it gave alumni the ability to reserve books and periodicals without charge.
Rec Card
The BSUAA remained the producer of the Rec Card for the Office of Recreation Programs. The Office of
Recreation Programs provided applicant verification for 571 BSU-affiliated individuals since 2000.
Recreation Privileges
All active members of the Alumni Association were eligible to purchase memberships to BSU recreational
facilities for their spouse, children, and themselves (currently $150 per year). The membership utilized the
Alumni ID and provided access to Ball State's exercise rooms, weight rooms, indoor pools, racquetball
courts, and locker and shower facilities.
BANK CARD
Our five-year agreement with First USA Bank ended in September and the balance of monies owed per the

Fourteen students were selected to the Homecoming Steering
Committee who planned traditional activities for the week, such as
Opening Events, Air Jam, Bed Race, and the Student Scholarship
Talent Search. Spirit Events for 2001 included volleyball, Sumo
wrestling, twister, and a tricycle race. The Steering Committee also
planned two events for Ball State faculty and staff, the Faculty/Staff

campus, and community organizations; and enriched relationships with individual alumni to increase
alumni participation.
The initiative of the iAlumni Relations program was to meet with alumni, either individually or in groups,
to establish or renew relationships. BSUAA staff members visited 107 individual alumni and answered
questions, provided updates about alumni programs, gave updates on BSU and the campus, and discussed
volunteer opportunities.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The use of technology continued to play an important role in alumni
programs, services, and communication.
The alumni e-newsletter, NEWS from the Cardinal's Nest, was
published and sent monthly to an average of 19,433 alumni. The
newsletter contained information about Ball State University and the
Alumni Association.
E-mail was used to send Alumni Association event and program
reminders to alumni that were initially informed by regular U.S. mail.
The main focus of the technology staff continued to be the enhancement of the Alumni Association Web
site. Areas of the Web site browsed frequently included: the Alumni Registry/E-mail Directory (7,980
participants), the Alumni Locator Service, Upcoming Events, and Programs and Services.
The site content and services continued to grow, specifically with the addition of the COR Online
Computer Training service, iAlumni Relations, upcoming events, and reunions.
A new in-house training program was initiated in June. Training sessions were led and developed by the
Alumni Association technology staff. Staff members attended sessions about various software programs
used by the office and completed online evaluations developed by the technology staff.
INSURANCE PROGRAM
The BSUAA sponsored three alumni insurance programs in conjunction with American Insurance
Administrators (A.I.A.) The programs offered to alumni and their families were GradMed, short-term
medical insurance; GradGift, free life insurance policy to new graduates; and AlumniTerm, life insurance

NEW GRADUATE MAILING
The new graduate mailer was designed to welcome recent graduates
into the alumni ranks and brief them on what the Alumni Association
can do for them as an alumnus. The mailing also offered
congratulatory gifts from the BSUAA and was sent to July,
December, and May classes.
Items contained in the packet were a welcome letter, a Garfield
brochure, an alumni update form, and a BSUAA window decal. Gift
offers included free return address labels and a Collegiate License
Plate waiver for one year.
Last year, 5,357 packets were mailed; 811 returned; and 110 license

Amendments
The Alumni Association, Alumni Council, and affiliated committees met during the year and amended the
constitution and bylaws of the association, the Ray Ashley Memorial Scholarship, and Oliver Bumb
Scholarship criteria.
The most significant change was to the constitution and bylaws. A new member was added to the
executive committee. That person would serve as the Association's representative to the Ball State
University Foundation.
Community Service
During the 2002 tax season, Chicago area Ball State alumni participated in The Tax Assistance program
spearheaded by Sarah Merrion, '94, a Chicago resident.
The Tax Assistance program was a volunteer organization whose sole purpose was to help Chicago
families fill out their tax returns during tax time. The program helped families that made less than $30,000
last year and a majority of the families that asked for help were financially challenged, unable to speak
English, or both. The program claimed millions of dollars in federal income tax refunds for Chicago
families. This was the seventh year of operation for The Tax Assistance Program, and last year $6.3
million dollars in income tax refunds were recovered for 4,354 Chicagoans.
Dinner Theater
The BSUAA hosted a Valentine's Day Dinner and Theatre event on February 14. One hundred and
thirty-one guests attended a dinner at the Alumni Center and proceeded to Emens Auditorium for a
performance of the four-time Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime.
History Book
Ball State University, An Interpretive History, was released in the fall of 2001. The book, authored by
Tony Edmonds and Bruce Geelhoed, was a comprehensive historical look at the complex ways some
educators, students, and community members interacted as they lived as part of an institution of higher
education. The book was available through Cardinal Corner, beginning in November, and 357 copies have
been distributed thus far. In addition, Edmonds and Geelhoed were on hand Homecoming Day to sign
books.
Online Training
A new online training resource allowed Ball State University alumni, students, faculty, staff, and retirees
to take computer and business management courses at their desktop.
ExecuTrain Virtual Campus, an Internet-based learning service, was provided at a reduced rate through
Ball State's Center for Organizational Resources.
A wide array of office productivity, design media, computer professional, and business management
courses were available to participants at a time convenient for them. Registration provided access to a full
year of training from any Web browser, whether at home, at the office, or on the road.
Option One offered more than 347 courses in the office productivity and design media libraries for $69.
Option Two included the 500-plus office productivity, design media and computer professional courses for
$199.
The Harvard Business Management Skills series featured more than 66 courses ranging from improving
customer service and managing projects to finance and change management for $159. Other topics
included leading and motivating teams, negotiating for win-win results and giving employee feedback.
