Course Syllabus
I.
Course Title: 1026 US History A, 1027 US History B, 1028 US History C
II.
Course Description
1026 US History A
This required series of United States History courses examines our countryʼs history from 1600
to present. Writing will be a requirement for all students. To fulfill graduation requirements,
each student must take the United States History A, B, and C year-long course sequence.
Textbook: The Americans (McDougal Littell)
Readings: A variety of current supplemental readings will be included in this course.
III.
Course Objectives
Students will:
1. Understand important events that shaped the United States.
2. Better identify their responsibilities as free individuals in shaping society of the
future.
3. Recognize historical connections past to present, present to past events.
4. Develop a strong feeling for the “American way of life.”
5. Be challenged to focus on their critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating
historical sources and secondary articles.
6. Examine reference materials using technology.
7. Write complete responses to short readings.
IV.
General outline of course:
US History A: exploration to election of President Lincoln.
US History B: American Civil War through the Great Depression.
US History C: World War II to the Present.
Course Expectations:
1. Be on time.
2. Be a good listener.
3. Participate in class activities and discussion.
4. Have appropriate materials with you at the beginning of class.
5. Keep notebook neat and up to date.
6. Complete assigned work before you come to class.
V. Grading
The following percentages will be used to determine course grades.
A: 100-94
A-: 93-90
B+: 89-88
B: 86-83
B- 82-80
C+: 79-78
C: 76-73
C-: 72-70
D+: 69-68
D: 66-63
D-: 62-60
Each trimester will have 1000 points. The breakdown is 300 points for the final, 200 points for the
midterm, 100 points for quizzes, and 400 points for the notebook. Extra Credit opportunities are
available each week.
VI. Finally:
This course will be used to dispel many rumors of American History that you have been taught over the
years. We will explore many topics that you have only touched on in your previous classes. This course
will challenge you to think deeper than many of you have in the past. My hope is that you will leave this
course with a greater appreciation for the history of this country and a deeper understanding of why
events today tie into events of the past. We will move quickly in this class. Please take notes…you will
get to use them on occasion!
