There will be no “rounding up” to the next grade no mater how close you are. Your grade is based on how much anatomical information you learn. There will be no extra credit assignments offered. Graded Activities: • • • • Lecture Exams: Lecture exams will cover only the material presented since the last exam. Please refer to the calendar for chapters covered on the exam. Each will last approximately one hour. Lecture exams can only be made up under extraordinary, documented circumstances. Lecture exams may be composed of a combination of multiple choice, true/false, matching, short answer and essay questions. You will NOT need a scantron sheet for exams. Lab Exams: Lab exams will be given in a round robin format where students rotate between 20-25 stations with 1-3 questions at each station. Lab exam questions will address the identification of a labeled structure and be short answer (be able to spell the structures correctly). Each will last approximately one hour. Due to the time involved in setting up a lab exam there will be no lab exam make-ups. Quizzes: Quizzes are worth 15-30 points each and will be given every day there is not a lecture or lab exam. They will address information from the previous lab or lecture meeting. Each will last less than 30 minutes. These quizzes may be of any format including multiple choice, short answer, true/false, or essay. Some may be group discussion questions. Group discussion quizzes can not be made-up! Clean up: Points will be subtracted from your total if you routinely leave your lab area messy. Attendance/ Late Policy: I do not take attendance on a daily basis so there is no official attendance policy. There will be certain assignments however that cannot be made up (lab exams, discussion quizzes). Also, your grade on exams will be negatively affected by missing lecture material. Please make every effort to come to class daily and on time. Exams and quizzes will be given at the beginning of every class except Monday July 7. If you are late and miss a lab quiz you will not be able to make it up. If you are late beginning a lecture exam you will be given until the amount of time allotted to the rest of the class has elapsed (55 minutes from the start of class). Being late to a lab exam will result in you receiving a zero for some of the stations. Plan on most classes lasting the full 4 hours every day. I will try to incorporate 15 minutes of break. Additional Business: You are expected to follow the honor pledge on every assignment: “On my honor as a University of South Carolina at Aiken student, I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on the assignment/examination. To the best of my knowledge, I am not in violation of academic dishonesty.” IF I CATCH YOU CHEATING ON ANY QUIZ OR EXAM YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT AND POSSIBLY AN F IN THE COURSE!!! If you have a physical, psychological, and/or learning disability that might affect your performance in this class, please contact the Office of Disability Services, B&E 134, (803) 643-6816, as soon as possible. The Office of Disability Services will determine appropriate accommodations based on documentation. From the USCA student handbook: “It is the instructor’s right to remove from the classroom any student who disrupts or disturbs the proceeding of the class. Disruption of the class includes but is not limited to the use of any portable electronic devices, including cell phones, MP3 players; iPods, etc. unless prior approval has been given to a student or unless required for the course. In extreme cases the faculty member can request assistance from University Police. If the student who has been ejected causes similar disturbances in subsequent meetings of the class, he/she may be denied admittance to the class for the remainder of the semester and assigned a grade of F.” What this means for this class: IF I SEE A CELL PHONE IN YOUR HAND DURING AN EXAM I WILL TAKE YOUR EXAM AND GIVE YOU A ZERO – NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!! I encourage you to take notes on your laptops if you wish but please do not visit disruptive and distracting websites during class. A note about anatomy……. Anatomy is not an easy subject and you may find it to be the most challenging subject you will encounter in your college career. There is a minimum amount of knowledge you are expected by your college (nursing, prepharmacy and exercise science) to obtain in this course. I am under obligation to provide you with this material and to test you on it. I have done my best to pare down the content as much as possible while staying within the expectations of your college but you will still find the amount of material challenging. You must put forth effort to study the material on a daily basis to be successful in this course. I highly recommend that you use the study guides provided and set up study groups to go over the material before exams. Try very hard not to miss any classes. Take careful notes of what I say in class. If you find it difficult to keep up with my lectures please use a tape recorder to record them. If you have trouble understanding a concept, please come see me as soon as possible. I can also help you with study and note taking tips if needed. Being a summer class, the schedule is grueling. The amount of information provided to you is the same as in the regular semester. This is not a “watered down” summer course. You should think of anatomy as TWO COURSES since lab will take as much effort as lecture. If you have a full time job or are taking another class right now you should not be taking this course in the summer. To excel in this class you will have to spend some time after the scheduled time period in the classroom to study lab content. The classroom is open to you 24/7. You can access the room with your USCA ID card. If you have questions or need help with anything in this course please email me and set up an appointment to meet. I will generally be available M-TH from 8:00-8:30 and 12:30-1:30 but I cannot guarantee I will be in my office unless you set up an appointment with me.
