If you do not wear eyeglasses, you should obtain
safety glasses. You will also need to purchase
disposable surgical gloves since you will be
handling preserved specimens. (Caution: Exposure
to formaldehyde has been linked to cancer in rats.
Also, formaldehyde interacts with some contact
lenses to produce an undesirable reaction.) If you
have special health considerations or conditions,
inform me so that we can seek further information
with regard to exposure to a laboratory environment.
Course Description:
A survey of human anatomical structure.
Course Objective:
This course is designed to introduce students to the
anatomy of the human body through a study of cells,
tissues, organs and organ systems.
Course Content:
In this introductory course lectures on human
anatomy will be combined with laboratory exercises
that employ the human skeleton, various human
anatomic models, and the dissection of a rat.
Attendance Policy:
Attendance at lectures is expected and attendance
and participation in laboratory sessions are part of
your overall lab grade. Each unexcused absence
from lab will result in points being deducted from the
lab grade which counts 20% of the overall course
grade.
By the end of this course, the student should be able to describe the:
prototypical human cell
four primary tissues
major organs of the human body
major organ systems of the human body

2. Bring laboratory manual to the laboratory sessions
3. Endorse the following Honor Pledge on every exam: “On my honor as a
University of South Carolina at Aiken student, I have neither given nor
received unauthorized aid on the assignment/examination. To the best of my
knowledge, I am not in violation of academic honesty.”
4. No make-up laboratory practicals and no make-up lecture examinations will
be given except under some noted situations (see Student Handbook).
5. If you have any questions, problems or other concerns that I might be able to
help you with, then please see me directly or arrange to see me through Ms.
Cutsinger. I consider it a privilege to teach, and will try to help you in any way
that I can.
6. If you have a physical, psychological, and/or learning disability that
might affect your performance in this class, please contact the Office of
Disability Services, B&E 134, (803) 643-6816, as soon as possible. The
Disability Services Office will determine appropriate accommodations
based on medical documentation. We will use the machine-graded
Scantron 100 question sheets for all of the Lecture Examinations. Please be
sure that you have the Scantron Sheets and a #2 pencil on the day of each
scheduled quiz/examination. All other personal items will be left in front of the
lecture room during the exam. So, on the day of the exam, please enter the
room and bring all items except for a #2 pencil and your answer sheet to the
front of the room for temporary storage. Assigned seats will be utilized for the
exams.

student from the instructor or unless required for the course. If you are
planning to have any of these devices in class, they must be turned off and
stowed away for the duration of the class period. If you use a portable
electronic device during a test, quiz, or other assessment, you are eligible to
receive a failing grade on that assignment.
