Make sure to attend the first Educators’ Evening Open House and Museum Showcase on Friday, March 17, to find out! The label “educators” is meant to be broadly inclusive. Pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade teachers are welcome, but so are day-care providers, teacher’s aides, parent leaders, youth group staff and volunteers, home-schooling parents, school administrators, college instructors and professors, and anyone else in east central Indiana with a commitment to education. The museum will be filled to the brim with eye-opening activities and hands-on opportunities. There will be tours demonstrating Visual Thinking Strategies, methods of inquiry that help glean meaning from discussion about art objects. A demonstration of the museum’s new project, Digital Imaging Delivered Online (DIDO), is another must-see. Representatives from the Muncie Children’s Museum, Minnetrista, and National Model Aviation Museum will showcase their facilities’ information and resources, as well as provide free learning materials. Refreshments will be provided, as well as entertainment throughout the evening. The first 200 guests will receive a free tote bag stuffed with gifts, and door prizes will be given to a few lucky winners. A special reception will be held before the event for supporters and media. address city work phone e-mail state home phone zip spring 2006 Volume 11 | Number 3 Friday, March 17, 2006 • 5 pm to 8 pm Illustration from photographs taken at BSUMA Frederick J. Bower The Educators’ Evening is meant to communicate the educational value of our area museums. This event is also intended to reach all east central Indiana pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade formal and informal educators to view the resources available, while giving educators time to network with each other and representatives of Muncie museums. “I am thrilled that the Ball State University Museum of Art will be the host of the first Educators’ Evening Open House and Museum Showcase for east central Indiana educators,” said Peter Blume, BSUMA director. “Too often, educators do not have a first-hand opportunity to learn what museums can do to enhance student learning. I hope the BSU Museum of Art, together with Minnetrista, Muncie Children’s Museum, and National Model Aviation Museum, will show that we have resources from teacher kits to tours to further critical thinking for student success.” Registration is required for this free event and can be completed before the event or at the door. May 19 through August 27 explore creatures of the sEA & air Scene from The Passion of Christ • Jules-Claude Ziegler • 1842-1848 Lent by Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher passion of christ: twelve paintings by Jules-claude Ziegler A special exhibition demonstrating exceptional religious conviction dating from the second quarter of the 2 nineteenth century will be installed in the Brown Study Room from March 24 until August 27. The opening of the exhibition coincides with the last weeks of Lent, the period in the Christian calendar leading up to Easter. The twelve paintings were made in Paris as a series between the years 1842 and 1848 by painter Jules-Claude Ziegler (1804-1856). The Passion of Christ is a sequential series based on descriptions in the Bible of the events leading up to the death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Most of Ziegler’s work was done in Paris, although he was often inspired by his travels to Italy, Germany, and Belgium. He studied under the dominant artist of his time, Jean-August-Dominique Ingres (1780 – 1867) and also François-Joseph Heim (1787 – 1865), both great realist painters of the early 19th century. By showcasing his remarkable talent for religious painting, he was established as a painter of history in the Salons of Paris by 1833. These successes enhanced the popularity of his highly detailed style. In 1835 he began an ambitious project to produce a fresco painting in the cupola of the choir at L’eglise de la Madeleine, one of Paris’ most important churches. A History of Christianity was completed in 1838 and Ziegler’s reputation as an accomplished artist in the historical genre was established. Ziegler’s realism and dramatic flair is abundant in the choreographed compositions of The Passion of Christ. Figures and scenery are arranged as if the canvas were to take on the identity of a theatrical stage, and this technique lends itself to the expression of movement and action; the shouts of the crowd surrounding the crucified Christ are nearly audible thanks to Ziegler’s care and dedication to graphic detail. The paintings are lent to the BSUMA by Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher, who have generously lent them for public exhibition as a whole series before presenting them to the High Street Methodist Church in Muncie. The Museum is grateful to the Fishers for bringing work of this quality to the broader community in East Central Indiana. Central Park John Albok • 1945 BSUMA Gift of Betty Esman Samuels & Vernon A. Samuels Fishing Expedition Chair Roger Brown • 1975 BSUMA Following in the pawprints of last year’s successful MuZOOum exhibition, a new collection of artworks is gearing up for visitors of all ages. Fish and Fowl: Creatures of the Sea and Air in Art will feature artworks from the museum’s permanent collection that share aviary and aquatic themes and appeal to the young (including the young at heart). Fish and Fowl kicks off on Friday, May 19 and will offer a series of fun and educational activities for kids, parents, and caregivers. Presented will be everything from the prints of John J. Audubon to Roger Brown’s Fishing Expedition Chair and everything in between; only our artists’ imaginations will limit the experience that is guaranteed to amuse, enlighten, and edify our visitors. This exhibition will be on view from May 19 until August 27 and will be a main feature of the museum’s July 1 Family Day. Stay tuned for more details in our summer newsletter. 7 May 19 through August 27 recent acquisitions show As part of the museum’s constant mission to bring a wide range of artworks to the Ball State and Muncie communities, not to mention its own permanent collection, many works of art have been newly obtained in the past several years. Too many, however, have gone quietly unnoticed as they join their appropriate areas in the museum without the ceremonious welcome they deserve. Included will be Old Master and modern prints and drawings; ethnographic art from the Americas, Africa, and Polynesia; and European and American decorative arts. Important sculptures slated for this exhibition are a Qi Dynasty Bodhisattva from China and a Festival Bronze of the Chola Dynasty from India. Outstanding modern paintings by abstract expressionists Perle Fine (1908 – 1988), Norman Bluhm (1921 – 1999), and Chicago Imagist Roger Brown (1941 – 1997) are also included. In this exhibit the new acquisitions will be arranged thematically and displayed with insightful commentaries by BSU professors from various disciplines, including history, classics, and art. These works of art will be gathered in a special exhibition beginning May 19 and ending August 27. Many recent acquisitions will be exhibited for the first time at the museum. This unique opportunity to view a diverse group of artworks is not to be overlooked. 6 Spitball Tony Smith • 1961 BSUMA Special exhibition preview • Friday, March 31 71st annual student art show Since 1935, the Ball State Museum of Art has exhibited art in all mediums made by students, giving them the opportunity to present artworks in a professional setting. A special exhibition preview on Friday, March 31 will mark the beginning of the 71st Annual Student Art Show. Artworks to be displayed are chosen by judges from several hundred submissions, and approximately 100 will be exhibited at the show. A juror will then select a few winning entries, the artists of which will receive prizes of cash and/or art supplies. More prizes, including purchase awards, are given by the BSU Libraries, Muncie Art Students’ League, College of Fine Arts Dean’s Office, and other campus groups. While it may sound simple, Endi Poskovic, last year’s judge, clarifies otherwise: “I found myself having to make some very tough decisions because there were so many strong entries. Clearly, the Ball State University Art Department stimulates creativity and intellectual growth, and provides a rich and diverse field through which artists can create a path in their search for truth and beauty… there were hundreds more artworks worthy of being shown than could possibly be included in the exhibition.” Josh Winkler, 2005 Dean’s Purchase Award winner, remarked “In art school, our work dwells rolled-up, on racks, or in drawers. In the student show it’s framed-up, finished, and on the walls of a museum.” Students not only gain an important stepping stone in the path to careers in the visual arts, but can also have fun by wearing a wacky costume, as has become tradition for the show. Visitors are also encouraged to dress up and come enjoy the finest efforts from developing Muncie artists!
