UMKC teaching in Fall Semester 2004 Calculation of SCH (Student Credit Hours) Note: these are 'rough' data but the best available! Data collection and analysis: Ken Hill, Jakob Waterborg By "Regular" faculty (i.e. tenured Full Professors, tenured Associate Professors and tenure-track Assistant Professors) By "Non-regular" faculty: this not only includes non-tenured instructors and ad-hoc, part-time "visiting" professors and other adjunct instructors, but ALSO clinical professors (all ranks) who are nontenure-track (prevalent especially in Schools of Medicine and Nursing) and "research" professors (all ranks) who do some teaching in research-active schools, especially for graduate instruction. Note that the total headcount of full-time Clinical and Research positions is much higher than listed here: the listing is restricted to those who (explicitly) had teaching assignments. Full-time vs. Part-time analysis (see below the main table) shows that about 2/3 of all SCH taught by Non-regular faculty is by part-time instructors, i.e. largely 'visiting' and adjunct positions, versus 1/3 by full-time non-regular faculty, i.e. lecturers and instructors in addition to some clinical and research faculty. The clinical "part-time" faculty in the School of Medicine include several hundred faculty who are full-time employed by the affiliated hospitals and not by UMKC. Headcount was calculated from the same data. Headcount was calculated from the same data. As most regular and non-regular instructors teach in all semesters, this probably is a fair representation. However, some part-time faculty taught in more than one unit and are consequently counted more than once. Student teaching has been excluded. Furthermore, to limit the categories, some types of instructors and appointments were combined, especially in the part-time categories.
