——————–“Educating our students to reach their full potential”———————
Hello!
Let me first start by saying Thank You to all of
our great students who worked so hard on the
Readathon and earned over $11,000 for RES. We
had many students reading thousands of hours! What a great
success for our school! Thank you to all of the parents that
helped and encouraged your students during the
Readathon. Secondly I would like to remind everyone that we
have started a new friendly Box Tops contest! The winning class
will enjoy a picnic and a visit from the ice cream truck! Remember that you can ask friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, anyone to help you collect Box Tops! This is a wonderful fundraiser
for our school! The next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, May 6th,
6:00-7:30 pm, in the media center. Everyone is invited to attend!
Kristina Schweigert, PTO President
Here is an update from the April 1st meeting, submitted by Mrs. Kelly, one of
the staff members serving on the PTO.
•
Did you know that the PTO is working hard to get away from the fundraisers where kids sell things? We are committed to the Innisbrook and
Club's Choice fundraisers for one more year, then we are hoping to
make the Box Tops, Readathon, and SCRIP take the place of the traditional fundraisers.
•
Did you know that $11,000.00 dollars were raised in the Readathon?
•
Did you know that Target presented our school with a check for
$1,263.91. This comes from the Target Credit Card Sales. When you
designate a school they receive 1%. We have 262 people who have
designated RES as their school.
•
Did you know that Target now has a new program where you don't
need to use credit to donate 1%. You simply take in a check and they
will give you a debit card. Your purchases are then deducted from your
checking and our school will get 1%.
•
Did you know that over the years of this Target program our school has
received $18,000.00!
•
Did you know that we have received almost $14,000.00, from Box Tops
over the years?
•
Did you know that Mark Olson and Lynn Schneider are working incredibly hard on the Box Tops campaign? They are designing new envelopes and the students will get these to keep collecting over the summer. They will also distribute these envelopes at the parade this summer.
•
Did you know that Mrs. Knight received $932.00 in books for the library
from the Usborne Book Sale?
•
Did you know that RES will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2 years?
Did you know the PTO is thinking ahead to these festivities?
Class Lists for 2008-09 School Year
During April and May of each year, the staff places
students into their classes for the next school year.
This is a process that takes thoughtful consideration
at a number of different levels. We recognize the
special needs and learning styles of our students.
Throughout the process, we attempt to create purposeful placement and make every attempt to balance
our classrooms. Our class lists do not become final
until early August.
Some of the factors we use to determine student
placement are – reading level, math ability, special
services, student behavior and the need to separate
students based on request.
An initiative throughout the elementary schools in
our district is called “clustering.” This is a grouping
strategy for meeting the needs of identified gifted
and talented (G/T) students. The cluster classrooms
at Rosemount Elementary have up to five identified
GT students with classmates at a variety of different levels. Because we do not formally identify our
primary age students, clustering at the lower grades
is less formal.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions
regarding our class placement process or clustering
classrooms.
Sincerely,
Tom
The student class placement request forms for the 08-09
school year are now available in the school office. Parents
may indicate specific educational needs and best classroom
climate for their child’s continued progress.
However, we will not accept requests for specific teachers.
The forms should be returned to the office by April 25th.
Thank you.

Nutrition News Flash
Greetings from Food and Nutrition Services!
Just a reminder that the school district is offering parents the option of paying for school
meals through the School View portal at their specific school.
Payments can be made using VISA, MasterCard, Discover
Card or with your personal checking/savings account. There
is a 4.29% fee for the convenience of the service using online
payment.
On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, Ms. Hunt’s First Graders
walked to the Rosemount Post Office. There, the students mailed off their “Flat Selves”! The students were
very excited and they are looking forward to their upcoming adventures. Flat Stanley and others are off to
many destinations:
California
Florida
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Missouri
Kansas
Ohio
Philippines
South Carolina
Texas
Utah
United Kingdom
Virginia
The students anticipate the return of their “Flat Selves”
within the next few weeks. They also look forward to
letters, pictures, and postcards that will share about their
adventures.
Ms. E., (Kathi Engebretson), our yearbook coordinator, and phy. ed. teacher, would like to extend a
THANK YOU to all parents and staff members who
have been volunteer photographers this year!
The list includes: Mr. Idstrom, Kristi Conway, Laurie Cornell,

In addition to online payment, School View will give parents
access to information about their child’s school meal account.
When using School View, there is the option to check for a
low balance reminder so that your student never runs out of
money in his/her meal account. A low balance reminder will
be sent to you via your e-mail address that you include when
you set up the School View account. Your food and nutrition
services manager will thank you for helping to make her job
just a little bit easier!
Another reminder for the upcoming Universal PIN distribution: All students within the school district will be receiving a
new lunch number sometime during these upcoming months
before the school year is over. The benefits to assigning new
Universal PINs are:
1) The student will have the same PIN number throughout the
entire school experience in district 196.
2) Should your student change schools within the district, the
same PIN follows your student.
3) If your student attends a different elementary school from
the school that they attend for summer school, the student
keeps the same number. They can go back and forth from
one school to another and never be issued a new PIN.
High school students going from their “home school” to
SES and back can keep their same number.
Our food and nutrition services managers will help the students with their new PINs as we are going to convert students’
current numbers to their new Universal PINs grade by grade
week by week in elementary schools. Middle schools may be
done by grade or all at once. High schools may be done all at
once. All new PINs will be distributed to the students by
close of this school year.

ROSEMOUNT ELEMENTARY
In April and May students in grades three, four and five will take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA-II) tests in reading and math. These tests were developed by
the State of Minnesota to evaluate district, school, and individual student progress on the state’s academic
standards. Students do not pass or fail the MCA-II tests. They are among the many assessments our district
uses to measure the progress of individual students.
Math
The math tests for grades 3, 4, and 5 include multiple choice and open response questions involving shape, measurement, number sense, and chance and data handling.
Reading
The reading tests for grades 3, 4, and 5 include multiple choice and open response questions that test skills in
comprehension, interpretation and evaluation.
Science
Science tests will be given to students in grade 5. This test is taken on the computer, and includes questions
which require students to make graphs and “drag” images into designated response areas.
Individual results for MCA-II tests will be shared with parents of third, fourth, and fifth grade students in the
fall of 2008.
TESTING TIPS
Discuss-Talk to your child about
the importance of doing his/her
best.
For more information about MCA tests you may contact Kris Scallon at (651)
423-7690 or visit the state website at http:/education.state.mn.us.
TEST DATES
Support-Regular study habits
should be encouraged throughout the year.
Reading-April 22 and 23
Relax-These tests are not “pass”
or “fail”, but a chance for your
child to show teachers what
he/she knows.
Tests will be given in the morning and afternoon on
test dates.
Math-April 29 and 30
Eat-Breakfast is important every
morning.
Listen-Following directions will
help your child do his/her best.
Encourage your child to ask
questions for clarification.
ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT
Vacations, late arrivals and early releases are
disruptive on MCA test days.
