My first teaching position after graduating from college was
in a small town near Rochester, Minnesota. The elementary
school was the recipient of a grant from IBM that funded a
computer lab in the school. We had a “state of the art”
computer lab. The kinds of programs and skills the students
worked with were fun and interesting, however reflecting
back on that time, they weren’t challenging – or aligned with
any of the curriculum. That was 20 years ago.
Technology within schools has become an effective tool for
student learning. We currently have two computer labs and
computers in every classroom. Students use this technology
for assessments, projects and research.
Beginning this week, we will be installing special white
boards in some of our classrooms that allow teachers to
project lessons and information that will be interactive for
the students. These new SMART Boards use a computer,
projector and an interactive white board. Graphics, video
clips, shared curriculum among teachers, and student work
are some of the endless possibilities that this new tool will
allow our staff and students to work with.
Funding for this project comes from our Parent Teacher
Organization, grants, curriculum funding and capital outlay.
Our plan is to install an interactive SMART Board in every
classroom at Rosemount Elementary within the next three
years.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT !
Help Prevent Pertussis
Have you heard a child with a cough that lasts more than a
week? A whoop? Gasping for breath? Gagging or vomiting
after a coughing spell? It could be pertussis (commonly
known as “whooping cough”). Yes, pertussis is still
around!
You may be wondering how people can get pertussis when
most are vaccinated against this disease. It takes several
doses of pertussis vaccine to provide protection, and protection does not last forever. Adolescents and adults are at risk
for pertussis even if they have been vaccinated. If they get
pertussis, it is usually mild, but they can spread the disease
to un-vaccinated and partially-vaccinated infants and young
children. These children are more susceptible to severe illness and complications such as pneumonia and seizures.
If you are suspicious that a child in your family has pertussis,
please take the child to the doctor and request to have
your child tested for pertussis. It is very important to know
if a person has pertussis in order to treat it and to prevent
the spread of the illness to others. Pertussis is treated
with an antibiotic. If the antibiotic is started early in the illness, it may decrease the length of the cough. People who
have been exposed to a person with pertussis are also often
given an antibiotic to prevent them from developing the disease.
The best protection for pertussis is vaccination. DTaP
vaccine is for infants and children 6 years and younger.
Tdap vaccine is a new booster vaccine for children 10 and
older and adults up to age 65. Tdap is strongly recommended for adults who spend time with or provide care for
young children (i.e., childcare providers, parents, grandparents, and healthcare providers). If you haven’t already had a
Tdap booster and it’s been at least two years since your last
tetanus (Td) booster, you should get Tdap as soon as possible.
DTaP and Tdap vaccines are available at your medical clinic
or at the Dakota Public Health Department (located in Apple
Valley and West St. Paul). Children and adults who do not
have health insurance that covers vaccinations may be eligible for low-cost vaccine. For a schedule of public health clinics, go to www.co.dakota.mn.us and click on “Immunizations”
in the “Health & Family” section, or call 952-891-7999.
If you would like to learn more about pertussis and hear what
a pertussis cough sounds like, go to http://
www.pertussis.com. If you have more questions, call 952891-7500 and ask to speak to a Public Health Nurse in the
Disease Prevention and Control unit.
Help protect those you love and care for by preventing
pertussis.

Hello from your PTO President!
Well, the holidays are finally over, and
we seem to have gone into a deep
freeze lately. I'm sure many of you are about to go stir
crazy with having to keep the kids in the house - but if
you can hold on for just a couple more weeks, your PTO
has the perfect solution for you. FAMILY FUN NIGHT
is February 19th! This is a family event that is sponsored by your PTO. It's guaranteed to be fun for the
entire family. Hope to see everyone there.
Also coming up in February is our annual Read-A-Thon.
February is "I Love to Read" month, and our Read– A–
Thon is now in its 3rd year. This is a great fundraiser
for RES, and is beneficial for the students!! Please
watch Friday folders for more information on this great
fundraiser.
There are some exciting things happening with your RES
PTO. Consider joining us for our next meeting on February 3rd to see for yourself. We always welcome all
who want to attend. Remember your children will be
cared for by the RHS National Honor Society students. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

National Geographic Geography Bee Champions
Did you hear the cheering? That was RES fourth and
fifth grade students enjoying the National Geographic
Geography Bee finals. Ten finalists from Rosemount’s
fourth and fifth grades masterfully answered questions
through seven rounds towards their goal of being this
year’s Geography Bee Champion!
This year’s champion was Osman Mansur who will now
complete an extensive written test to qualify him for the
State Championship. Congratulations and good luck Osman! The winner in second place was Joan Yambing, followed by Devin Brand in third. What an accomplishment
for all of you!

NO MESSAGE?
NO NEED TO CALL SCHOOL
The office receives many calls from parents asking if someone
was trying to call them from the school -because our phone number appears on their caller ID.
Unless a message is left on your phone, please do not call the
school. The office staff will not know which room the call came
from or be able to tell you who made the call.
If a call from school is urgent or requires a return call, the staff
member will leave a message, or try to reach you at another number you have listed on your child’s emergency card.
It is very important that you keep the school informed of any
changes in your contact information. Thank You.

There is no greater sound than that of students cheering
on other students for their academic excellence. This
happens each year at the RES Geography Bee thanks to
our generous PTO who financially supports our students’
participation in the National Geographic Geography Bee.
Thank you!

“I Love To Read”
February is “I Love to Read” month. During
this month we encourage children to read
more at home and at school.
The Read-a-thon “Reading Rocks” will be
celebrated this year during “I love to Read
Month.” What a great way to support your
child’s reading.
Classrooms will decorate their doors as book
covers that you can view on February 19th
during Family Fun Night.
Friday, February 20th, will be an “All School
Read” day. Each classroom will decide how
they want to celebrate that day.
Thank You to parents Peter and
Barb Sweet (Ryan’s mom and dad /
Ms. Kish’ classroom) for the donation of 4 brand new bikes and a
small trampoline!
They will be used by our occupational therapists Jackie
Young and Sara Wahlstrom and also by our adapted physical education teacher Brett Kosidowski.
It is greatly appreciated and will help develop motor skills
in our students!
We do not have enough donated books to
have a “Used Book Sale” at this time. If you
have books you want to donate please send
them to the library. If we receive enough
books during February, we will hold a sale at
the end of the month.
