Each spring at Rosemount Elementary, students in third, fourth
and fifth grade take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment
(MCA). The percentage of Rosemount Elementary School students who scored proficient on the state reading test decreased
slightly from last year; however, students’ reading scores continue to exceed the state average. Last spring 88 percent of RES
fifth grade students’ demonstrated proficiency on the MCA-II
reading assessment. This is an indicator of how our staff and
teachers throughout our school positively contribute to the learning of our students prior to leaving for middle school.
The MCAs are given each year to students statewide in grades 38 (reading and math), grade 10 (reading) and grade 11 (math). At
Rosemount Elementary School approximately 315 students took
the MCAs last spring. Results for individual students will be
mailed to parents in early November.
The MCAs measure student performance on the Minnesota Academic Standards, which define what students should know and
be able to do in a particular grade. Students earn a score that falls
into one of four achievement levels: 1) does not meet the standards; 2) partially meets the standards; 3) meets the standards, and
4) exceeds the standards. Students who meet or exceed the standards are considered to be proficient in the subject area.
In math, a new test was given to students in grades 3 through 8 to
measure new, more rigorous state academic standards that were
implemented last year. The results of this year’s math test will
establish a new baseline for student performance on the new academic standards. 64.9% of the students in grades 3-5 at Rosemount Elementary demonstrated proficiency on this new assessment. This score reflects seven percentage points higher than the
state average.
The MCA is one tool that measures academic performance of
schools in Minnesota. It allows us to compare our school’s performance and plan for improvements -- while celebrating
achievement success.
Please contact me if you have further questions regarding this
tool to measure student progress.

Vision Screening
Vision screening is recommended by the Minnesota Department of
Health in grades one, three and five. A vision referral letter is sent home only if your
child fails the screening exam. School vision
screening should not take the place of a complete eye exam by an ophthalmologist, which
is a more thorough evaluation of eye
health. Please contact the School Nurse,
Jeanne Fifield, RN at 651-423-7692 if you
have any questions about the vision screening
process.
Use of e-mail at Rosemount Elementary School:
We value effective communication at our school. The use of e-mail has increased over the last few years. Most of our staff members do not
have their e-mail accounts open during the school day while they are working with students. As stated in our handbook: The staff at RES
have an agreement to reply to e-mails within two school days. If your need to communicate with a staff member is urgent, please call the
school office (651-423-7690) and we will relay your message to the appropriate person.

5th Grade Band
We have just finished our
third week of lessons.
Box Top News….
All students are now
keeping track of their practice time on a
practice chart. Parents should sign this
chart each week. If your child has not
asked for a signature yet, please remind
them that they need to be using their practice chart!
Get ready to blast into the fall competition starting on Monday 10/10/11. Start sending those
tops in with your students!!! Each week class envelops will be collected and counted, with totals being announced on Monday mornings.
This year we have set a goal to collect 85,000
tops, in order to meet this goal we will need EVERYONE’s help. This would equal $8,500.00 in additional income to the school.
Our goal as a band is a minimum of 20
minutes, five times per week.
The winning class in each grade will be treated
to a movie and popcorn party!!!!
Band rehearsal begins
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4th
At 7:50 am.
Please drop off students at the back of the
school. They should arrive about 7:50 a.m.,
so each child has enough time to set-up
their instrument, be seated and ready to
play for the 8:00 downbeat! We will continue
to have lessons during the school day, but
are ADDING group rehearsal on all Tuesdays that school is in session.
Memo from the Media Center
We will be hosting our “Used Book
Sale” this fall for all the students in the Media Center
on the mornings of Wednesday, October 12th, Thursday, October 13th, and Friday morning, October 14th if
there are still books to sell. Students can come to the
Media Center and purchase a book for 25 cents. This
has always been a hit with the students at Rosemount
Elementary. If you have books that you would like to
donate please send them to school with your child or
drop them in the Media Center before the sale. The
money is used to buy the Caldecott and
Newbery winners.
Thank you for your donations of books!
Rosemount Elementary School
The money will be used to purchase add on
tools for the SMART boards we have. These
hand held devices will allow the teachers to
‘check-in’ with their students after covering a
topic. They can design a series of questions that
the kids can use the device to answer the question. This will give the teacher immediate feedback as to level of understanding of the students.
Check out the Box Tops website by going to
www.boxtops4education.com. If you register at
this site you can track our progress online, get
notified of special online games where you can
win Bonus Box Tops, and earn electronic Box
Tops by shopping online. A new product this
year is Boise Cascade paper! Make sure you
check to see what type of paper is used at your
work – each ream of paper has a top on it.
When turning them in make sure the expiration
date is visible, we do not get credit for them if
they are expired or the date is not included.
Again we are looking for volunteers to help us
count – if interested please contact boxtops@repto.org Watch for updates on the PTO
website as well as in the Friday folders.
Thanks !

Rosemount Elementary School
Volunteer
Corner
The first month of our new
school year has passed by so
quickly! I hope everyone has
settled into a good schedule.
I want to recognize the many
volunteers who have helped so
far this September:
Thank you to all the parents who assisted the K+ and
1st grade students in the cafeteria the first 2 weeks of
school. It was wonderful for all the extra helping
hands for directing children through the lunch line
and for opening milk cartons and snack bags.
A big thanks goes to Sarah Rothstein, Ramona Murphy, and Amy Sutton for all their efforts in organizing the “Reading Rocks” Read-a-Thon fundraiser.
They’ve been busy collecting forms, handing out
prizes, and counting all those minutes our students
have read so far.
Thanks also to all who helped students look their best
on Fall Picture Day, especially Sarah Rothstein for
coordinating the many volunteers who came that day.
I’d also like to thank all the parents who filled out my
RES Volunteering Form. It is so wonderful to see
that we all want to make our school a better place by
sharing our time and talents. Please send in yours if
haven’t done so already.
