Lift Every Voice and Sing BE TRUE TO WHAT YOU SAY ON PAPER Words: James Weldon Johnson, 1871–1938 Music: J. Rosamond Johnson, 1873–1954 Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song, full of the faith that the dark past has taught us; Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered; We have come, treading our path thru the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. Peace Doves Sponsored by Roots & Shoots Started in 1991 with Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of teenagers, the Roots & Shoots network has blossomed into tens of thousands of members in close to 100 countries, all working on local and global community service projects. Many of the original members are still involved, continually finding new ways to make our world a better place. The local Roots and Shoots group is comprised of students from the Forest Grove School District as well as the Community School and is led by Charlie Graham. Origami Peace Cranes will be taught and shared again. This is a children’s international symbol of peace, based on the true story of Sadako. She tried to fold 1,000 cranes before dying of leukemia caused by the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Roots & Shoots is Jane Goodall’s environmental / humanitarian program for youth. Each group designs activities that improve the world for animals, improves the environment, and improves the human community. It is now in over 130 countries.
