2004 Arizona Cotton Growers Breeding Program Preliminary Strains Testing Program S. Husman and K. White University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Abstract An Upland Cotton Breeding Program was initiated in 2001 by the Arizona Cotton Growers Association (ACGA). Major objectives of the breeding program are to develop varieties that produce a superior fiber quality package, high yields, and under a wide range of environmental conditions. In 2004, the seed committee of the ACGA decided to begin an independent testing program in order to quantify the performance of chosen lines developed to date that were meeting the program’s goals. Forty one lines were chosen and evaluated in replicated small plots at two locations including Yuma and Maricopa, AZ. The final data was sorted according to lines that at both locations had a fiber micronaire of 4.9 or less, staple length of 37 or greater, strength of 30 g/tx or greater, a uniformity index of 80 or greater, and yielded in the top 25% of all tested materials. One line was identified according to this criteria, 0122-2033-304. Introduction Variety selection is the most important decision a cotton farmer makes at the beginning of each season. The extremely hot and dry environmental conditions in Arizona are unlike those anywhere in the United States cotton belt. Arizona varieties must have a high level of heat tolerance, must offer consistent high yield potential, and produce high quality fiber in order to be a profitable crop and meet the rapidly developing buyer demands. In an effort to increase the number of high yielding and high quality fiber package choices, the Arizona Cotton Growers Association (ACGA) initiated an Upland Cotton Breeding Program in 2001. The ACGA breeding program has produced a large number of genetic materials. The seed committee of the ACGA recognized the need and value of initiating an independent testing program to begin a quantitative evaluation of the materials that had advanced through the preliminary phases of the breeding program. Therefore, a Preliminary Strains Testing Program was initiated in 2004 with the tested lines chosen by the ACGA breeder. The ACGA breeding program will continue to aggressively evaluate the various genetic materials in inventory so that future breeding program direction and decisions can be made based on field measured yield and fiber quality characteristics. Materials and Methods The ACGA breeding program preliminary strains experiments were planted at two locations in 2004, Yuma and Maricopa, Az. The Yuma experiment was conducted on a commercial cooperator site (Monte Lee) while the Maricopa experiment was conducted on the University of Arizona Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC). Forty one of the same preliminary strains were evaluated at both sites and compared to 2 popular commercial check varieties in Yuma and 3 commercial check varieties in Maricopa. Arizona Cotton Report (P-142) May 2005 105 The experiments consisted of 4 replications and were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Plots were four rows wide and 38 feet long, 42 and 40 inch rows in Yuma and Maricopa respectively. The experiments were dry planted and irrigated up on Mach 4 and April 14, 2004 at Yuma and Maricopa respectively. A seeding rate of 25 pounds per acre was used to assure an adequate stand. Stands were hand thinned to a targeted uniform population of 40,000 plants per acre on March 23 and May 5 at Yuma and Maricopa respectively. The experiments were harvested on August 24 and November 4 at Yuma and Maricopa respectively. The center 2 rows of each 4 row plot were mechanically harvested with a Case-IH 1822 2 row spindle picker which had been modified and equipped with load cell measurement equipment specifically designed for small plot work. Seedcotton subsamples were taken from each plot and ginned to determine percent lint. Final lint yields were then calculated on a per acre basis. Each fiber sample from the ginning process was submitted to the USDA Cotton Classing Office in Phoenix for HVI analysis. Results and Discussion A major objective of the ACGA breeding program is to develop varieties with a superior fiber quality package while also achieving the yield potential of the most popular commercially produced varieties. It is recognized with clarity that the trend in buyer demand of high quality lint will continue to intensify. The vision of the leadership of the breeding program is that the Arizona industry will be recognized in the future for production of consistent high quality lint and will be rewarded with premium prices. Another goal is to develop varieties that have a broad adaptation range due to extremely diverse production conditions and environments in Arizona. Arizona cotton is produced at elevations of sea level to almost 4000 feet above sea level. In addition, some regions of the state tend to produce for a single fruit set while other regional producers have a tendency to produce primary and secondary fruiting cycles for maximum yield purposes, taking full advantage of heat units in the low deserts. As noted, a major objective of the ACGA program is to develop varieties with high quality fiber, high yields, and have a high level of environmental or geographic adaptation potential. Comprehensive yield and fiber quality data tables are included in this report, but for discussion purposes, will note the genetic materials that survived the data sort according to desired criteria. The remainder of discussion will focus on several data sorts which will reduce the data to the lines identified based on desired criteria characteristics of quality, yield, and multiple location commonality. The first sorts were done by individual location on fiber quality. At the Yuma location, the fiber quality characteristics that were sought include fiber micronaire of 4.4 or less, staple length of 37 or greater, strength of 30 g/tex or greater, and a uniformity index of 80 or greater. Of the 41 lines evaluated, 13 were identified that met the criteria (Table 4). At the Maricopa location, the same criteria was used with the exception of fiber micronaire. Central Arizona production conditions consistently produce higher micronaire, therefore a value of 4.9 was used. This value was chosen based on the loan schedule identified maximum before discount. At the Maricopa location, 11 lines plus 2 check varieties met this sort criteria (Table 7). The next data sort of discussion will be those lines at Yuma and Maricopa that met the micronaire criteria (4.4 at Yuma and 4.9 at Maricopa), staple length of 37 or greater, strength 30 or greater, uniformity index of 80 or greater, and produced lint yields in the top 25% of tested lines. One line met the criteria in Yuma and 2 lines met the criteria in Maricopa Table 8,9). When comparing across both locations, 1 line met both yield and fiber quality criteria, strain 0122-2033-304 (Table 10). In summary, the data included within this report can be analyzed and evaluated in multiple ways. While only one line was identified that met the high quality fiber package, high lint yield, and location yield consistency, it is contended that this would be considered quite typical within a breeding program. In addition, several materials were very close and should be considered for at least a second year of testing under different seasonal environmental conditions. The preliminary strains testing program will be continued in 2005 with a second year of testing of several lines and the first year of approximately 50 more lines.
