ACADEMY
Our mission is to educate students, in cooperation
with the family and community, to have the
knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to
achieve their potential as socially responsible,
lifelong learners in a diverse and changing society.

Freshman Academy, a unique educational
opportunity offered for incoming 9th grade
students.








Improve basic skills in reading, writing
and math
Increase student retention of core
concepts over the summer break
Assist students with a smooth transition
to grade 9 at RHS
Offer students one elective credit
Offer field trips, group activities and
service learning opportunities
Learn how to get around the school
Introduce students to the expectations
of high school classes
Improve student’s ability for selfadvocacy, asking questions, and
expressing needs
The following criteria were used in
recommending your child’s attendance at
Freshman Academy:



MCA-II Math/Reading scores: “Does Not
Meet” or “Partially Met Standards”
Grades: Below average grades in any
core subject areas
Middle School Recommendations
District transportation is available for
Freshman Academy. Please register by
April 22 to secure a space on the bus.
To ensure transportation for your child, please
return the registration form or register online
before April 22, 2016. This deadline is
important as bus routes and hiring for
Freshman Academy staff must be completed
Students who have attended Freshman
Academy have made the following statements
about their experience with our summer
program.
“Freshman Academy gave me a better feel
for what to expect in 9th grade. Building
tours helped me figure out where my classes
would be located.”
Transportation will be provided for students
who ride the bus during the school year.
Requests for transportation received after April
22 will be honored; however, routes will
already be set up requiring your child to walk to
the nearest pick up/drop off location.
Transportation postcards will be sent to each
family in early June.
“I liked the field trips to Feed My Starving
Children. It really helped to get my service
hours for Government & Citizenship class.”
If your child participates in a summer camp at
RHS, such as Irish Gym, STP or soccer camp,
participation in Freshman Academy will work as
well.
“I had perfect attendance and received an
award. The field trips were fun. Getting a
copy of my Trimester 1 schedule was very
helpful.”
Freshman Academy will meet from
8:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. on the following dates:

some of my 9th grade teacher. It helped me
get adjusted to high school.”
