Geometry Quilt Project! This project can be done alone or in a group of two. If you decide to work with another person you will need to turn in a description of who was responsible for which parts of the project and how many hours you worked on it. Materials Needed: Quilt Project Packet Colored Pencils/Markers Ruler Internet Access (if this is how you choose to do your research) FABRIC!! (Old or new. You can buy new fabric at Wal Mart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn’s, etc. Or you can use old clothes/fabric you have laying around your house.) Fabric glue OR needle & thread (or you could choose to use iron on fabric if you don’t want to glue or sew your quilt squares together) The geometry quilt project is intended to help you learn techniques to analyze and describe geometric patterns. The sources you use for this project may be all internet, all print, or a combination of internet and print. The project is organized into three distinct sections: Section 1: Analysis (30 points) Due April 18th For the first section you will each analyze a minimum of three quilt designs (so you’ll turn in six total for a group of two). Prior to beginning the analysis you should read the attached article Quilted Math reprinted from the website: Riverdeep Interactive Learning Limited, Nov. 26, 2001 (http://web.riverdeep.net/current/2001/11/112601_quiltedmath.jhtml) . When you write your analysis section please print out or photocopy the designs you are analyzing to be turned in with your analysis. Label each design as “Figure 1”, “Figure 2”, etc., so you can refer to them in your analysis paper. The analysis of each design must be one paragraph typed and must include, as a minimum, the following elements: A description of the shapes utilized included how/where they are used The application of transformational congruence: translation, rotation, reflection, etc. Types of symmetry At the end of the analysis cite the source that you got the image from Good resources for pictures of quilts: www.quilterscache.com go to “Quilt Blocks Galore” in the dropdown menu Google Image search of “quilts” or a Bing Image search of “quilts” Quilting books at the library or a fabric/hobby store, quilting magazines, etc. Section 2: Create Two Possible Templates for your Quilt Design (20 points) Due April 25th For this section of the project you will create two possible designs for your 17cm X 17cm quilt square. You will use one of these designs for your final quilt square. Please use the given blank templates with the grid lines to complete this section. These designs are to be your own creation! They must be colored to create an interesting design. Be sure to use a straight edge and do them NEATLY. The design templates must have the following elements: At least 2 different geometric shapes Al least two different transformations applied to the shapes OR One tessellated shape Keep in mind that the more intricate your design is the better your grade will be in the end!! The effort you put into creating your quilt design will be reflected in your grade! Section 3: Final Quilt Design (50 points) Due May 2nd You will use one of your two design templates from section 2 to create your final quilt square. Your design must take up the entire 17cm X 17cm quilt block made out of fabric and will be attached to a solid 8in X 8in fabric square. You will also provide a detailed analysis of how your design is constructed. The analysis of your original design must be one paragraph typed and must include, as a minimum, the following elements: A description of the shapes utilized, including how/where they are used. The application of transformational congruence: translation, rotation, reflection, etc. and The types of symmetry You can complete your fabric square using iron on fabric, fabric glue, or by sewing the pieces together. Please keep in mind that NEATNESS counts towards your grade. On May 2nd you will turn in: Section 1: Three quilt images and the analysis for each (six total if you’re working in a group of two) Section 2: Two original quilt design templates completed using the given templates Section 3: One original 17cm X 17cm fabric quilt design WE WILL BE VOTING FOR THE BEST DESIGN BETWEEN MS. SHAW’S AND MRS. DIGIOVANNI’S CLASS. WINNER GET’S A $20 GIFT CARD TO THE PLACE OF THEIR CHOICE!!
