WESTVIEW ELEMENTARY SC HOOL MAY /JU NE 2016 The The Bulldog BulldogBulletin Bulletin Editor:Shawnessy Heidi Larson Editor: Schwartz Editor: Larson Editor:Heidi Heidi Larson thebulldogbulletin@yahoo.com thebulldogbulletin@yahoo.com thebulldogbulletin@yahoo.com thebulldogbulletin@yahoo.com thebulldoahoo.com Principal’s Corner Dear Parents/Guardians, This is always a bittersweet time of the year as there are so many unique learning opportunities for students outside of the school, our fifth graders are ending their classroom time at Westview and yet we are welcoming new kindergartners and planning for the next year. We continue to be Bulldog STRONG as we work together to respect our learning and each other and show gratitude for this awesome year. There will be summer learning opportunities for both students and staff as many of you have received information about Camp Propel at Echo Park and will hear more about summer reading hours at Westview before the end of the year. Families are welcome to continue to donate, take or exchange books in our little red library by our flag pole during the summer months. There is much research around the importance of continued reading opportunities throughout the summer to assure that literacy skills are not lost. We will again be sending out summer letters letting you know of your child’s teacher and giving you information about scheduling an individual summer literacy assessment before school begins. Our assessment days will be August 23 and August 24. This is a wonderful, valuable time for the teacher and child to connect and have some time together before the whole group gathers on the first day. I look forward to seeing many of you at Westview as we celebrate our end of the year, including the annual Spring Carnival and Fun Run. Bulldog STRONG, all year long, 50 years strong! P AGE 2 T HE B U LLD O G B U LLE T IN You’re Invited...To the Westview Spring Carnival Reaching for the STEAM Stars!!! Thursday, May 12th 5-8pm Spring is in the air which means the annual Westview Spring Spirit Carnival is quickly approaching! This year will be an exciting carnival year by bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to celebrate Westview!! We will be having several of the favorite carnival booths such as hair boutique, face painting, sand art and of course the bouncy houses (just to name a few), but we have some awesome new additions too!! Ever wanted to hold a giant snake or play with life size Legos? How about building a snowman after meeting Elsa, Anna and Olaf? Oh and don't forget meeting the characters from Star Wars or doing some fantastic Spin Art! We can't wait to share all these and more fun activities at this fun family, community event! To keep the spirit of STEAM learning throughout the whole year, all money raised at this year's carnival will go to supplying the Westview school with brand new STEAM tools to help the students of Westview learn, grow, collaborate together and of course have fun with the amazing subjects of STEAM! To make this night a success, we need more volunteers to leave their "paw prints" by volunteering to lead a booth or work a shift at the carnival! Sign up today by visiting the Sign-Up genius or emailing the Westview Carnival at westviewcarnival@gmail.com. Every helping hand or paw :) makes a huge difference and is so greatly appreciated!!! Westview Celebrates 50 Years of Learning We had a wonderful turnout for Westview’s 50th Anniversary Celebration this past Saturday, April 23. Many current and former staff gathered before the official start for a group picture on the playground. The building had wonderful “buzz” as people connected and shared memories. There was a display of memorabilia in the media center which included items throughout the years including yearbooks, photo albums, contents from the 25th year time capsule and a new quilt with designed squares from current and former staff. A timeline highlighted important events in our Westview history and participants could complete a trivia game using that information. The hallways were adorned with Westview spirit wear collected over the years, letters written in 1990 by the 5th graders and a VHS video of the celebration 25 years ago. (Some of the staff is still here!) Other activities enjoyed by our families and guests were a dance party led by some of our teachers, a photo booth complete with dress up items, a guest book and memory board, and what party would be complete without cake. Meaningful re-connections, pictures, laughter and favorite projects were shared. We even had area families join us whose children will soon be attending Westview. We will be getting a new bench for the front entrance to commemorate the people and events who have shaped the past 50 years as we move into the next journey of the Westview community. Thanks to all who helped in any way with the celebration ~ in the true spirit of the school, it was Bulldog STRONG! T HE B U LLD O G B U LLE T IN P AGE 3 Attention Parents! End of the School Year Check List [ ] Pay lunch accounts, there is no charging beginning Wednesday, May 25, 2016 [ ] Check Lost & Found at School: All left items will be given to charity in June. [ ] All Library Books are due: Friday, May 27, 2016 [ ] Inform the office if you are moving by filling out the slip below, return to Westview [ ] Daycare Forms for Next Year – Parents of students who will be attending a daycare, or who will be transported to or from an address other than the child’s home address during the 2016-2017 school year are reminded that new daycare forms must be completed on an annual basis. Call the office and we can send one home with your student. This form ensures that buses are routed accordingly. [ ] Parents of Children Taking Medication at School – Please remember to send medication doses to last only until the last day of school (Wednesday, June 8th). If you have any remaining medication at the school, it is your responsibility to pick it up. Inhalers only can be carried home by students with a written request to our nurse Eileen Johnson. Please return to the Westview Office: As we plan for the next school year, it is very important we know if students will not be returning to Westview in the fall. If your family will be moving before the end of the summer, or if your child will be attending a different school, we urge you to inform the office as soon as possible so our class lists will accurately reflect our enrollment.
