Process at Valley Middle School is to develop
positive leadership within our student body to
promote the attitudes of RESPECT,
RESPONSIBILITY, and SERVICE throughout
our school.
GOALS
Valley Middle School student leaders will
acquire life-long personal leadership skills as they
help to create a community of:
•
•
•
RESPECT - Where students,
through their language and
actions, foster a sense of
belonging, significance,
and security in the Valley
Middle School environment.
RESPONSIBILITY - Where
students understand universal
standards of conduct, think and
act with sound judgment, and
accept accountability for
their choices of behavior.
SERVICE - Where students
freely give of their time and

others.
Student leaders will participate in student
government by serving as a resource representing
student concerns, ideas or initiatives.

WHAT IS STUDENT
LEADERSHIP?
The Student Leadership Process is a
partnership of staff, students, and parents working
together to develop a positive, respectful
environment at Valley Middle School. Since
1993, student leaders have been trained to
provide peer leadership toward this goal. This
training is designed to develop personal
leadership skills that emphasize the qualities of
RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and SERVICE.
STUDENT
LEADERSHIP
PROCESS
Through our process, students become
more aware of their power to choose to make a
difference. They learn to recognize the needs
around them and how they may act to meet those
needs. Students also learn that service is an
essential element of leadership, and as positive
role models, they can truly make a difference.
VMS sixth and seventh graders are
eligible to apply for the Student Leadership
Process. Selection for the training program is
based on the student’s application and teacher
recommendations. The chief responsibility for
each Student Leadership participant is to help
make Valley Middle School a place of Respect,
Responsibility, and Service.
