Day of the Dead
Sugar Skulls
By:
Jada L.,
Emily H.,
Kate S.,
Claire M. and
Marie P.
What is day of the dead? It’s a holiday to celebrate people that you know that have died. They
remember children who have died on Nov 1 and adults on November 2. It’s supposed to be a
happy holiday, not scary or sad.
How do you form sugar skulls? You put sugar with egg powder and water into molds. You put
the plate on the mold, turn it upside down and take off the mold. You have to wait for the skull
to dry.
How do you decorate sugar skulls? You use frosting to hold on the sequins, feathers and pipe
cleaners. The frosting gets hard and holds them on.
What do the sugar skulls represent? The skulls are supposed to represent people you know
who have died.

Chinese Chess
象棋
Xiàngqí
The fifth grade students learning Chinese have finished their first language/culture
project. They learned how to play Chinese Chess (NOT Chinese checkers). Chinese
Chess is very similar to regular chess. However, in order to play, the students have
to learn how to say and recognize all the characters on each piece and their move. In
some cases, the move can be very different and complicated. The fifth graders are
very excited to play Chinese chess and now know one unique aspect of Chinese
culture and language.

Visitors from Germany!
FALL 2016
During the last two weeks in October, Diamond Path was excited to welcome Anja Sokoll and Andrea Schwenn to our school. As members of a team of German exchange teachers from Berlin, Ms. Sokoll and Ms. Schwenn spent time learning about American education while also teaching us about life and education in Germany. Ms. Sokoll and Ms. Schwenn presented in every class and felt very welcomed by both staff and students. They indicated a special interest in the “3B”s as they noticed how well behaved and engaged in learning Diamond Path students are. Perhaps soon, students in Germany will also be earning “Bee Slips”! The sharing that occurred between our guests and Diamond Path students and staff was meaningful and enriching for all. Thank you, Ms. Sokoll and Ms. Schwenn!

INTERNET SAFETY NIGHT
TUESDAY, December 1st from 6:30-7:30
in the DP Library/Media Center
The DP PTO 2015 Internet Safety Night provides a great source of cyber
security information for both children and parents. Children and parents
(Grades 3,4,5) are welcome to come listen to a guest speaker and ask
questions about how to engage in safe internet / cyber practices. Parents
and children will separate at the beginning of event; parents will listen to
guest speaker presentation in the main library area, while children receive a
presentation by the DP Technology Dept. in the Computer Lab.
Guest Speaker Information: Brian Morgan is a commissioned Army
Military Intelligence Officer (9 years and deployed to Iraq 2009-2010). He
worked as the Chief of Special Security for the Minnesota National Guard
for four years, during which time he directed the Security Education
Training and Awareness program across the organization. Currently, he
works for a software company as an Information Security Engineer, and is
responsible for enterprise Security Training and Awareness among other,
more technical, responsibilities. He has just completed training at the US
Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon, GA to become a certified
enterprise Network Engineer. His current military position is as an
enterprise network engineer and planner for the Minnesota National Guard.
