Grade Level News Grade Level News Kindergarten After Spring Break will we continue our Science units. We will be busy planting bean seeds during this time. We will be observing and recording changes in our bean plant. Exciting! Hopefully we will see some warm weather soon so we can observe other plants changing in our environment as well! WE LOVE SCIENCE! In April will be also starting a new author/illustrator study — Eric Carle. We are so excited! Joyful singing will be coming from kindergarten all of April as we practice for our May 13th music shows. Math time has us estimating, measuring, learning coin worth and patterning. We will continue with addition and subtraction story problems, discussing probability and learning time to the hour. Have an awesome April! Grade One As we move into spring, our first graders are beginning to look like second graders. Due to the great team effort between teachers, parents and students, the children have become successful readers. In math, we will be moving on to geometry. First graders will be able to compare and describe a variety of shapes. In science, we will begin our study of Insects. The students will observe life cycles of insects and learn about the stages of metamorphosis of a species. Grade Level News Grade Three April is a busy month in third grade. The students will continue to practice for the MCA-III (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments) reading and math tests that are given this month. Two classes took the reading MCA in March. In April, the math homework will help reinforce some concepts on the MCA math test. We appreciate you going over the homework with your child. Thanks for taking note of your child’s testing days and if possible, schedule your appointments around these days. In science, we will begin a unit on crayfish and plant life in the Structures of Life unit. The students love when the crayfish arrive! Please have your child keep studying the math facts and concepts. We encourage your child to continue to read each night. Thanks for all you do to support your child’s learning! Grade Four April is here and 4th graders remain active learners! New book goals for the third trimester were just set (please continue to help your child read 20 minutes every night to make this goal). During the month of April, our students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (math and reading tests). Preparation at school, as well as plenty of rest and a good breakfast at home, are important. Please be aware of your child’s testing days and (if possible) schedule your appointments around these days. Thanks for your support at home! Grade Five Grade Two Second grade learners are blossoming as we move into spring! We are enjoying our accomplishments as we progress in reading, writing and math skills. In reading, we will be focusing on a theme of "That's Incredible", as we read about incredible things in both fiction and nonfiction. Readers will be working on questioning strategies and learning to write responses to their reading. In writing, we begin a unit on poetry, which will allow our creativity to shine. Math work finds us focusing on two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, and being able to apply multiple strategies to our problem solving. We will continue to work on fractions, multiplication, division and data analysis as the year ends. Our last science unit is on plants and animals. Happy Spring! April is a busy month in fifth grade. On April 21st, we have our field trip to Children’s Theatre Company to watch Diary of Wimpy Kid. Following the performance, students will get the opportunity to visit Minneapolis Institute of Arts where we will encourage the kids to look around the museum for Art Adventure pieces that were discussed within each class. Later in the day, band students will demonstrate all they have learned throughout the year with the 5th Grade Band Concert. Also, throughout April, students will take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. They are tested in the areas of science, math, and reading. Plenty of rest and a good breakfast help students do their best during the tests.
