ALGEBRA II LOG & EXPO QUIZ:

Between 12 and 1 pm cars arrive at Wells Fargo’s drive thru at a rate of 6 cars per hour (0.1 cars per minute). The following formula from probability can be used to determine the probability that a car will arrive within ‘t’ minutes of 12 pm.

F(t) = 1

– e -0.1t

1) Determine the probability that a car will arrive within 10 minutes of 12pm (that is before 12:10)

2) Determine the probability that a car will arrive within 40 minutes of 12 pm. (before 12:40 pm)

3) What value does F approach as t becomes REALLY REALLY BIG in the positive direction?

4) Graph F with your calculator (nothing to show here)

5) Determine how many minutes are needed for the probability to reach 50%

A zero coupon is a bond that is sold now and at a discount and it will pay its face value at the time when it matures, no interest payments are made.

A zero-coupon bond can be redeemed in 20 years for $10,000. How much should you be willing to pay for it now if you want a return of: (Hint: What are solving for here, amount or principle?) a) 10% compounded monthly? b) 10% compounded continuously?

World Population grows at about 2% per year. If this continues indefinitely, how long will it be until we are all packed together like sardines? In answering this proposed problem, assume that “sardine packing” for humans is one person per square foot of land area.

In 1975 there were about 4 billion people.

Accordingly, the population in 1976 in billions was 4 + 4(0.2) = 4(1.02)

In 1977 it was 4(1.02)

2

In 1978 it was 4(1.02)

3

and so on

Hello, my name is_____________________________

1) Write a function, p ( t ) to model the world population growth described here.

2) If it was 4 billion in 1975, in what year will it be 8 billion? 16 billion? 32 billion?

Now we can solve the Packing problem! There are slightly more than 1,000,000 billion square feet of land area on the surface of the earth. Remember sardine packing for humans is about 1 square foot per person.

Washington (AP) - A new and potentially devastating computer virus was discovered late last week.

The announcement came from McAfee, the makers of the famous virus protection software. The virus, which has been named "Fred the Wonder Virus" or FWV, works a little differently than most computer viruses. Once a computer is infected with FWV it replicates itself as follows. Each copy of

FWV on the computer grows to ten copies the next day. Therefore the computer gets more and more copies of FWV in it each day. McAfee said FWV had made 10,000 copies of itself on one of their computers when it was first detected and by the time they had figured out what it was the same computer had 1,000,000 copies of FWV in it. According to McAfee if FWV is not stopped before it has reached 14,750,000 copies in the infected computer it will cause the computer to think it is a toaster.

Make a table:

X (days) 0

Y (# of FWV) 1

1) How many days after the virus infected the first computer did McAfee detect it?

2) How many days after the virus infected the first computer was McAfee able to figure out what it was?

3) Write an equation. Use this equation to figure out how long after the virus infected the first computer it will take before 14,750,000 computers are infected dooming us to have very expensive toasters that can't toast.
