AIRLINE COMPLAINTS
The Aviation Consumer Protection Division of the Department of Transportation operates a complaint handling
system for consumers who experience air travel service problems such as flight delays, mishandled baggage,
and rude or unhelpful employees. To provide consumers with information on the quality of services offered by
the airline industry, these complaints are published each month in the Air Travel Consumer Report.
The display below shows the annual totals from this monthly publication along with a graph used to model the
number of complaints filed during the 1990's.
1. Run a Quadratic Regression on your calculator to determine a function defined by this data. (Enter the year
1990 as year 0)
2. What does the x and y stand for respectively?
3. What does the model report as the number of complaints in 1996?
4. What does the model report as the number of complaints in the year 1990?
5. When is the first time after 1990 that the model estimates the number of complaints to be 6,230?
6. When is the second time after 1990 that the model estimates the number of complaints to be 6,230?
7. How many years after 1990 does the quadratic model estimate the number of complaints reached a
minimum?
8. Assuming that the number of complaints continues to increase in the future, how many years after 1990
does the model predict the number of complaints will reach 17,780?
9. Assuming that the relationship between number of complaints and time given by the model applies to the
years prior to 1990, how many years before 1990 were the number of complaints 11,900? Note: To indicate years
before 1990, use a negative sign.
