Curricular Requests from the Department of Psychology
1.
Request for New Course
a.
PSY 200, Careers in Psychology, 1 s.h.
Motion: To approve PSY 200 (Greenwood/Westerhold)
Ms. Nicholson pointed out that there is currently a PSY 200 course in deep freeze. In
response to a question, she explained that courses go into deep freeze when they have not
been offered for five years, and they are deleted entirely after ten years of inactivity and
approval of the department. PSY 200, Professional and Career Issues in Psychology, is still
on the catalog master file, so would need to be deleted if the new PSY 200 is to take its
place. Dr. Romano asked why the course went into deep freeze. Psychology professor David
Lane responded the course was formerly taught by a faculty member who retired, and it
apparently slipped through the cracks.
Changes:
 In the first line of Student Needs to be Served, after the statement “The department
offered a similar course for several years …” reference by title the specific PSY 200
course that is in deep freeze.
 Specify the PSY 200 course that is currently in deep freeze, with its title, in the
Courses to be Deleted in Conjunction with Approval of This Request section.
Ms. Hamm informed CCPI that CAGAS this afternoon is considering the S/U grading
portion of the PSY 200 request.

MOTION APPROVED WITH CHANGE 8 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB
2.
Request for Change of Option
a.
Applied Music: Jazz Studies
Motion: To approve Jazz Studies (Romano/Westerhold)
Chairperson LaPrad pointed out that if the major is to be increased, a rationale will need to
be provided since it is already over 120 hours. Music professor Moises Molina explained that
music programs across the country encompass a lot of hours because of accreditation
requirements. After discussion, departmental representatives decided to reduce the “special
courses” within the Option Courses category by 1 s.h. to accommodate the increase in MUS
397.
2
Changes:
 Within Proposed Option Courses category, change Special Courses from 14-15 s.h.
to 14 s.h.; change Music Electives from 20 s.h. to 20-21 s.h.; and change Electives
from 9 s.h. to 8-9 s.h.
 In Proposed Option Courses: Electives, change “Students electing grouping 2.d
above must complete … 6 s.h. from the following” to “…5 s.h. from the following.”
