Identification of Gifted Students USING DATA MINER (KDM)
2010-2011
To gather data for students by grade level:
1. PSD Website
2. Staff
3. Student Information Systems
4. Student Data Miner (KDM)
5. Make sure it says “Production” and click “Login”
6. Select grade (make sure low grade and high grade are the same).
7. Under Available Items, hold “control” as you use your mouse to select the
following:

m. Math Level Percentile Winter 2009 (if your school takes Winter MAP)
n. CogAT Verbal Age Percentile Fall 2009
o. CogAT Nonverbal Age Percentile Fall 2009
p. CogAT Quantitative Age Percentile Fall 2009
*If you are a secondary GT Site Coordinator, you can pull lists based on the CogAT
dates in the box. Scores can only be used together for identification if they are a year
apart.
8. Select the radio button for “Excel” and click “Fetch Selected Items.”
9. You will be prompted to save or open. Select “open.”
10. Immediately “SAVE AS” in your personal files. Do not save to desktop.
Make sure you save it as XMLS not HTML.
11. Select All information
12. Go to “Data” and select “Sort.”
13. Select Cogat Verbal (you will be selecting NV and Q later).
14. Select Descending.
15. On the tab at the bottom that says “KDM,” right click and select “insert.”
Repeat.
16. Name your tabs by the section of CogAT that was sorted. You can name a tab by
double-clicking KDM. Once it is highlighted, type “verbal,” “NV,” or “Quant” so
you can navigate the lists easily.
17. Adjust column titles. You can choose how to do this – I usually delete any
unnecessary information.
18. Page Setup (under “File) and select Landscape.
19. “Fit to” 1 page wide and X pages tall (depending on number of students).
20. Preview before printing.
21. Print each worksheet in this manner.
22. Save before closing.
23. Repeat for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Identifying Gifted Students Based on CSAP, MAP, and CogAT Data:
Either on computer on hard copy, do the following for all 3 spreadsheets:
4th grade only:
1. Highlight ALL CogAT scores equal to or above 95th percentile.
2. For those students with highlight scores, look for accompanying MAP or CSAP
Scores:
a. Quantitative and Nonverbal should be matched with Math CSAP or MAP
scores.
b. Verbal should be matched with Writing or Reading CSAP or MAP data.
3. If a student has at least 2 different assessments in the 95th percentile or higher,
they will receive a gifted identification.
4. If a student has some very high scores in either MAP or CSAP but borderline in
CogAT (85th – 94th) consider them for further testing/evidence gathering. The
same would go for a student who has extremely high CogATs and borderline
Achievement data.
5th -10th grade:
1. Using the list of students already identified, highlight students that already have
previously been identified.
2. Look for students with 95th percentiles or higher in MAP, CSAP and CogAT.
3. If a student has at least 2 different assessments in the 95 th percentile or higher,
they will receive a gifted identification.
For all grade levels: Note students without CogAT scores. They will need to be
administered the CogAT in November when we test district-wide.
CogATs will only be scored in the Fall and Summer.
