Continuum of Options for Consideration When Developing
Advanced Learning Plans
The following opportunities have been designed to meet the specific needs of gifted
learners at _________ School. Acceleration, enrichment, choice, and interest-based
activities define our work for advanced learners. As you examine the lists below for each
grade level, consider that these are not intended to be additional work for students, but
rather alternative opportunities to increase the level of challenge.
____________ has traditionally offered Honors courses for advanced learners and
motivated students. While these courses are not exclusive to only students with an
Advanced Learning Plan, they do provide opportunities that align with best practices for
gifted students.
Sixth Grade
Language Arts:
□ Improve vocabulary through the creation of a picture dictionary or vocabulary journal
□ Summarize independent reading with a reflective reading journal (books should be at
the appropriate Lexile reading level and journal should reflect higher level thinking)
□ Participate in monthly writing conferences to focus on improvement of specific traits
of writing
□ Choose a historical, scientific, or mathematical topic to research, and create a product
to share learning with peers
□ Create a content related higher level question to guide exploration of a unit of study,
explore and research the question, and share learning with peers
Math:
□ Successfully complete the CM2XL algebra unit with a grade of 85% or higher on the
summative assessment
□ Investigate an application of a math concept to a scientific topic
□ Collect, analyze, and report weather related data
□ Conduct a survey and use computer applications to analyze and report the results
□ Learn how to model 3-dimensional objects using computer applications
Other:
□ Learn a software program or language and apply knowledge to create a product that
provides evidence of learning
□ Set specific organizational goal for the year
□ Participate in a club within an area of interest
□ Participate in a peer tutoring program
□ Set specific organizational goal for the year
□ Participate in a club within an area of interest

Seventh Grade
Language Arts:
□ Improve vocabulary through the creation of a vocabulary journal (based on Core
Knowledge reading and vocabulary lists)
□ Summarize independent reading with a reflective reading journal (instead of reading
packets)
□ Research and present background knowledge for reading units
□ Participate in monthly writing conferences to focus on collection of written work
Math:
□ Successfully complete the Connected Algebra course with a grade of 85% or higher
(and advanced course for 7th grade students).
Other:
□ Set specific organizational goal for the year
□ Participate in a club within an area of interest

Eighth Grade
Language Arts:
□ Successfully complete in English honors course
 Two writing contests
 Socratic seminars
 Literature circles
 Additional unabridged texts
 Higher level vocabulary
 Additional writing opportunities
 Writing for a live audience
□ Participate in video announcement class
□ Independent Study
 Choose a historical, scientific, or mathematical topic to research, and create a
written product to share with peers
 Participate in monthly writing groups to focus on improvement of specific traits
of writing or on a collection of written work
 Create a content-related higher level question to guide exploration of a unit of
study, explore and research the question, and share learning with peers
 Create a journal documenting growth and “wonderings” in a specific area
Math:
□ Successfully complete the geometry or Connected Algebra course with a grade of
85% or higher (measured by unit tests, summative test or overall grade)
□ Create a journal documenting the use of math concepts or theorems in the real world
□ Participate in the applied technology engineering course
□ Study a math topic independently study outside of school monitored by parents
Other:
□ Participate in Global Leadership class
□ Participate in the Web program
