Weakness of the Articles of the

The problem with this scenario was that
government power had been given to each
individual state. The different states had
different opinions about taxation and when the
nation needed funding, (military, etc.) congress
could do little to regulate distribution.
Taxation had caused many problems during this
time because of unequal governmental power.
On the one hand, the Northern States had wellcultivated land and valued property. The
Southern states benefitted from labor in the
form of slavery. This issue caused a large
debate among congress which created problems

Constitutional Issues – 20pts
Look through a newspaper, magazine or on the Internet. Find a legal case currently in the
news that deals with a constitutional issue.
Write a brief summary of the case. Be sure to answer all of the following questions.
1. What is the constitutional issue in question and who is involved?
2. Describe the background of the case. When, where and why did it go to trial?
3. Has this case been decided? If so, what was the decision? If not, what do you think the
decision should be and why?
Students must include basic issues and answer the questions.
Unit 3 Government Relations
Government Teacher – 20pts
Create a presentation about the powers of the Federal Branches of Government. It can be
a Power Point, brochure, chart, video, song or any other format that you think would
capture the attention of your students.
Acting as a teacher, you need to know your audience, so assume that you will be
presenting the material to a class of 7th or 8th grade students.
Your presentation needs to include at least:
Explanations of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches
The basic purpose of government
The powers given and the powers denied to the Federal government
The organization of the Federal government
Rules and Regulations that bind the duties of the branch
How members are elected and how long they serve
Examples of balances between the systems
Students must create a presentation age appropriate and include all the required points.

International Interdependence – 10pts
Research the global economy and find a country that is currently seeking to establish a
new and greater economic relations with the United States. Typically countries that are
less successful financially have the greatest interest in connecting with our system.
Answer the following questions:
What is the benefit to the United States of interacting with other nations?
Why do other nations want to interact with us?
Why don't we treat all nations equally?
Government systems are a major factor in international interactions. Why does the United
States prefer interaction with certain types of government rather than others?
What role does government play in the protection of workers?
What role does the government play in allowing the sale of goods and services?
These are not easy questions. You will need a full explaination for everything and use the
nation you researched to make your point in your answers.
Sample Student answer:
A country that is dying to interact with America is India. India has so many people
but not enough jobs for their workers. Their solution to this is to work for America
and produce goods for us.
What is the benefit to the United States of interacting with other nations?
 By doing business with countries like china and India it saves the united states TONS of
money. Minimum wage is a lot lower in those other countries then it is in the United States.
Workers in China could get paid 1$ an hour for something that someone in the US would get
paid 7$ an hour for doing.
Why do other nations want to interact with us?
 There are many different reasons for other countries such as India want to business and
interact with us. One big one is because interacting with the United States brings their
countries a great deal of money. In many cases the United States will pay a country more for
their services at a price that would seem cheep compared to the US wage but an excess
amount of money compared to the normal wage of other countries.
Another reason has to do with our military. The United States has the strongest military in
the world. So if India were to need our help, we lend our military help to them if they ever
get into a rut. Last but not least, countries like India want what we have. They want the Nike
shoes and the fashionable clothes and the style and society of America. By interacting with
us they get a little bit of what it’s like to live in America.
Why don't we treat all nations equally?
 Since nations all have different beliefs and ways of life its more of a political or
economical standard. Economic and Political views can cause a lot of disagreement and
conflict between countries. We hold our nation to a higher standard then some other
countries might have and to be different worlds apart and try to communicate and work
together is hard work. It’s not always possible.
Government systems are a major factor in international interactions. Why does
the United States prefer interaction with certain types of government rather
than others?
 Government systems play a huge role in the way nations interact and who we become
allies with. In America we have many laws to protect workers and laws to dictate trade and
such. We refuse to interact with nations like Iraq because unlike the US they don’t have
child labor laws or over time pay or anything like that. They just put people to work for
cents an hour and don’t care. We don’t want to associate with countries like that because
they abuse their people for our services.
What role does government play in the protection of workers?
 As I mentioned a little bit about above, we have child labor laws and over time pay.
There are certain laws that have come of place to protect workers and to encourage or
enforce education opportunities. Countries used to put children to work in mills or factories
for 20 hours a day on minimum wage and no over time pay. Laws like the Child Labor Law
have been formed so that children go to school instead of work and they aren’t abused. Same
with the Over Time Wages, even though people are scheduled to work only a certain amount
of hours, most companies pay over time wages for the extra time they work.
What role does the government play in allowing the sale of goods and services?
1) Correcting market failures
2) Providing public goods
3) Adjusting for external cost or benefits
4) Maintaining competition
5) Promoting full employment and price stability
6) Limiting government programs
7) Managing imports and exports
8) Managing barriers to trade
9) Managing exchange rates and balance of payments with foreign markets
Unit 4 Media and Politics
News News – 10pts
Select a recent event that was widely reported (hint, the front page is a great place to
start).
Rewrite the article keeping the basic storyline, but so that it gives a completely different
point of view.
In your article you must include:
A Eye Catching Headline
At least 8 of the facts presented in the original article
Sample student submission:
New News:
Originial story taken from the New York Times: “Iraq Marks Withdrawal of U.S. Troops
from Cities”
My Article:
AMERICAN TROOPS AND EFFORTS SLANDERED BY IRAQI
NATIONAL HOLIDAY
-After all of the work our troops have done in Iraq, the citizens make the
day we pull out a national holiday.
Baghdad, Tuesday, June 30th, fireworks are set off, parades are held and a national
holiday and celebration is declared. The day of joy has come for the citizens of Iraq, our
troops are heading out of there. After these past years of success, dilligence, patience with
the Iraqi people, and compassion for the war efforts, it is clear what the Iraqi people really
feel about the presence of our troops. As soon as the signs of departure were given, Iraq was
thrown into festivities blatantly insulting the long hours and days that we as a nation spent
there keeping the Middle East under seige. That being said, no sooner had the festivities
begun when a roadside car bomb exploded, killing at least 24 citizens, some of which may
have been US soldiers. Have fun dealing with those problems when we leave Iraq. However
it is clear to us that you didn’t appreciate our efforts in the first place.
Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki positions himself as “a proud leader of an
independent nation looking ahead to the next milestone.” (New York Times) I hope his
efforts hold the country in place when we leave. Al-Maliki assured his nation that “Those
who think that Iraqis are not able to protect their country and that the withdrawal of foreign
forces will create a security vacuum are committing a big mistake.” (New York Times) I
hope so too al-Maliki. It shall be interesting to see how everything turns out with a confident
nation ready to take on their own problems… Let’s hope they don’t have too many roadside
bombings per day…
Although General T Odierno, the American commander in Iraq received thanks from
the prime minister and refuses to take anything that the Iraqis have been boasting about
seriously, it is clear that Iraq doesn’t fully appreciate the long-term efforts Odierno and the
thousands of loyal men and women who are serving have been striving for. The feelings
about our presence in the Middle East from the citizens changes throughout the nation.
Some appreciate our being there, others despise the troops for “heavy-handed security
techniques, for creating traffic jams, and for generally reminding the Iraqis that they are not
in control.” (New York Times) Hm… something tells me that if they knew how to stay in
control, we wouldn’t need to be there in the first place. The citizens’ festivities included
flowering police officers, participating in parades and putting up signs declaring the holiday
as Iraq’s independence day. As the troops are leaving, I just wonder what they may be
feeling. I suppose war isn’t something in which everyone can win, but respect is one thing
that the citizens of Iraq don’t seem to have for our troops who had been putting their lives on
the line for their sake… In a recent update on the car bombing, it happened in Kirkuk in a
poultry and vegetable market. 26 have been confirmed dead, and 40 some people have been
wounded… Let’s hope Iraq can fix this.
Direct Democracy – 15 pts
Write an essay in which you either support or reject the idea of a direct democracy in this
technological age. Your essay should be approximately 150 - 200 words and include the
following:
1. A clear statement of which side you support and detailed reasons why.
2. Support your view with researched evidence and cite all your sources.
3. Acknowledge how technology and the Internet have changed our political system, but
explain why this does or does not support a direct democracy.
Sample student submission:
In today’s technologically advance society I agree with the idea of “Direct
Democracy.” The idea of Direct Democracy in today’s age I believe would reduce conflict,
and encourage people to take a part in their political society. A direct democracy is where
the peoples vote counts directly towards the issue, or the presidential candidate, rather than
to an electoral college. Reasons that I believe that a Direct Democracy would work are
because of our presidential elections. I believe that it would encourage people to get
involved in their political communities if people believe that their vote truly affected the
results of an election. In today’s technological age I feel that in order to the US to truly elect
the President we want we should be using a direct democracy. Many can see how the idea of
a direct democracy would have been beneficial during the 2000 election of Bush v. Gore. In
a direct democracy, Gore would have won, because he won the popular vote, according to
Wikkipedia. Although, in today’s technological age there are ways that technology affects
politics. Technology severely affects politics during the 2000 election with Florida, where
votes were miscounted. I believe that having a direct democracy would have solved this
technological issue. It today’s technologically advanced society, a direct democracy would
be best.
Unit 5 The People
Party System – 10pts
Consider what you know about politics, voting and parties.
Create a list of three issues that concern you currently. You may select a controversial
issue, as long as you handle it in a school appropriate manner.
Do research and find one or two political parties that support one or more of your values.
List those parties and their website addresses.
Do you agree with everything in the party, or just on some things?
List at least two issues that the party supports that you either do or do not agree with and
briefly explain why.
A sample student submission:
Issues:
1. Abortion:
-
I have always been a pro-life person and believe that abortion is wrong.
An un-born baby is still a human life in my mind and should be entitled to
a life on this earth just like everyone else.
2. Immigration:
- I am a person who doesn’t agree with illegal immigration. Immigrants
who can’t go through the naturalization process and become official U.S.
citizens should not be treated as Americans. I feel as though we should
secure our borders and come up with a system that ensures we remain a
nation of legal citizens.
3. Gay Rights:
-
Although I find that I am a primarily conservative person, there is one
issue that I take a somewhat left-wing view on, and that issue would be
gay rights. Having grown up knowing someone who was gay and seeing
the struggles he faced, I find myself in support of gay rights. I don’t see
the issue as a choice, rather, it’s something that a person is born with and
doesn’t decide on. Many people think that people choose to be gay when
in reality, I don’t see how anyone can choose to live a life of being so
different, being discriminated against, and being frowned upon in society.
Parties:
Abortion:
-Republican Party: The republican party is a pro-life party and strives to
encourage the ideas of adoption, foster care, abstinence, and education regarding sex and
pregnancies, especially in teenagers. This party considers an un-born child a human which
deserves the right to life. Abortion is seen as a selfish act and is one that can be considered a
crime.
http://www.ontheissues.org/celeb/Republican_Party_Abortion.htm
I agree completely with this party in terms of the issue of abortion.
Immigration:
-Republican Party: This party opposes the idea of illegal immigration and
encourages safety and new methods of maintaining the idea of naturalization. This party
stresses on the dangers of illegal immigration to the citizens and seeks to find methods of
monitering travel and improving the process of naturalization.
http://www.ontheissues.org/celeb/Republican_Party_Immigration.htm
I agree completely with this party in terms of the issue of immigration.
Gay Rights:
-Democratic Party: While the democratic party is not completely for gay
rights, it is more open to the idea of accepting the gay percentage into society more than any
other party. Gay marriage is one thing that most democrats seem to find as somewhat
acceptable.
http://www.democrats.org/a/communities/lgbt_community/
I agree for the most part with this party in terms of gay rights. This is the only issue that I
side with the democratic party on.
IIIegal Immigration – 15pts
Briefly research the topic of illegal immigration over the Mexican-United States border.
Write a 300 - 500 word essay with at least 2 cited sources (citations are not part of your
word count!)
Pick a side of the argument, either for or against and come up with a solution that you think
would help the problem. You should consider:
How will it be funded?
Is your solution Constitutional?
Has this already been tried, or is it being done now?
Do not argue both sides. Pick a side and write a critical answer.
Sample student submission:
Illegal Immigration
I have a strong belief that illegal immigration must end. With many Hispanic
immigrants coming into the country, they are stealing jobs that can go to American citizens.
They are also destroying American culture by bringing their own culture to the country and
some even refuse to learn the English language. Some live off money and welfare from the
government without working. Because of this, I feel there needs to be a change made to
decrease immigration while still strengthening the United States.
In order to show the Hispanic people that immigration must come to an end, I would
start by building a huge wall across the entire Mexico-United States border. This would
serve as a symbol that illegal immigration is not welcome or encouraged and is now
blocked. With that, I would have to increase security along the border. There would be many
guards that would need to patrol for those individuals trying to enter the country, and they
would make them turn back and return to their homes. I would strive to fund this through the
government, if at all possible.
I would also begin deporting them because they are breaking the law by being in the
country. Most illegal aliens are here for work, and many American business owners hire
them and pay them very small salaries. It is said that immigrants come to the United States
for this work as well as family connections. From deporting those in the country, many
would stop coming because they have no family connections. As well, if I fined business
owners employing illegal immigrants they would stop hiring them and they would no longer
have work. I could then use the money they were fined to help pay for the wall I would
build. This, therefore, would abolish any of the illegal aliens wishes to come to the country
because they would have no family and no job opportunities.
It would also be in my best interest to find the people who are paid to bring illegal’s
over the border. When found, these individuals would also face punishments because they
are breaking the law by helping Hispanics across the border.
This system has not been tried yet, but it certainly not unconstitutional. Illegal
immigrants are not American citizens and are breaking the law by being in our country. It is
absolutely acceptable for them to be in our country, but they must take proper steps to be in
the United States by applying for citizenship in the country. After gaining citizenship, they
must also absorb our culture and learn our language in order to preserve our culture, our
independence, and our constitutional rights and equality…legally.

Sample Final Project:
(This speech is supposedly set in 2004, during the time immediately following the Tsunami that
struck the Middle East)
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FMA),
The recent Tsunami of 2004 that struck the coasts of multiple nations bordering the Indian
Ocean and took the lives of thousands of people exemplify our need for protection against future
Tsunami and other natural disasters. As it is well known, the Tsunami of 2004 reached a magnitude
of 9.3 according to a seismograph. The countries affected include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Somalia, Malaysia, and various other Middle Eastern, and some African countries. The aftermath of
this unpredicted disaster included death, famine, starvation, thirst, and increased risk of disease for
particularly poor countries. Although the Tsunami didn’t affect the North American countries, there
are many places in the world that need more efficient methods and resources of protection. We were
fortunate to avoid such a disaster solely because of geography. However, we have experienced our
fair share of hurricanes and tornadoes and as a nation, understand the shock and chaos that come
from natural disasters. My friends, other nations need our help. Hundreds are without homes,
thousands are displaced completely, and too many are grieving the loss of loved ones. The United
States can be thanked for supplying food and water to many of the citizens needing help. However,
there are still far too many people who’s lives could have been spared and the response time from
the U.S. was less than quick. Our aid should be in the form of anything that can help the people. It
is understood that not every citizen can be saved from something like this, but our efforts and aid
can significantly help the situation. We can devote a good deal of money to the people who need
help. Our costs can cover certain expenses like transportation (getting citizens out of places of
danger), food to those who need it, safe water to drink after the flooding, establishing and funding
relief programs to build houses and buildings that were destroyed, and access to health care to
reduce the risk of the spread of disease, and to heal those who have been injured because of the
wave. Our aid should take the primary form of establishing relief programs to cover the above
necessities. If we as a nation take the time, energy, and spend the money to build multiple programs
and organizations dealing with various aspects of relief in the majority of the affected nations, the
citizens will see their ways of life improve dramatically. No one deserves to have something like
this disaster happen to them or their loved ones, and it is up to the United States of America, as a
world power, a proud protective nation, a country that has always helped others in need, to step up
to the challenge and reach out to those during this time of struggle. Natural disasters are not terrorist
attacks, they are not the result of any one country, or the fault of any group of people. They are
spontaneous and cruel. They are unpredictable and uncontrollable. What we can control however, is
how those affected will be helped. I urge you to take action and do what you can to help all of the
innocent people in dire need. At this point, establishing hospitals and health care organizations is
one of the most important things we are faced with. With the body count so high, and water having
swept much of the middle eastern coasts, the people run the very high risk of contracting diseases
like cholera, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B, diptheria, and others. Also, people need access to safe
drinking water seeing as the flooding wiped out many water facilities and the people can not be
drinking sea water. Food is another issue, with farms and food industries left in ruins, people are
starving. What we can do is provide for these people, establish food banks, water sources, use the
Red Cross and other health care organizations to help. During this time of struggle, I ask you, if you
were a citizen of Indonesia who’s family was lost, and home was destroyed, would you not want
help and be eternally grateful when a nation as powerful as the United States was finally there to
give it to you?
