This will make it easier to share documents that are very long. History of the Working Well and Tobacco Free Initiative Working Well Initiative The Working Well Initiative began as collaboration with the Healthy Carolina program at USC. This program included an initial assessment of USC Aiken in 4 Pillars including Nutrition, Tobacco, Physical Activity and Wellness Culture. • • The Assessment Tool originated from NC Prevention Partners and is distributed by South Carolina Hospital Association. This assessment and personnel resources is an “in kind” relationship to branch out into the Higher Education market. The USC system is the first university to be invited to participate in the Working Well initiative. November 20, 2012 – Initial presentation with SC Hospital Association o Invited: Dr. Jordan, Joe Sobieralski, Brent Wustman; Maria Chandler; Carla Hayes; Susan Hallman; Cindy Gelinas; Mike Jara; Brian Parr; Sara Campbell o In attendance: Dr. Jordan, Joe Sobieralski, Cindy Gelinas, Brent Wustman, Maria Chandler, Carla Hayes, Mila Padgett • • • • January 2013 – Working Well Assessment Completed o Invited: Brent Wustman; Maria Chandler; Carla Hayes; Susan Hallman; Cindy Gelinas; Mike Jara; Brian Parr and Sara Campbell were invited to participate in the initial assessment of USC Aiken. o In attendance: Brent Wustman, Maria Chandler, Carla Hayes, Brian Parr and Mila Padgett were in attendance to complete the assessment. o Report Card Results: § Nutrition D § Physical Activity C § Tobacco D March 2013 – Site visit from SC Hospital Association Completed o In attendance: Brent Wustman – Nutrition; Mike Jara – Tobacco Areas and Vending; Mila Padgett – All of the above April 2013 – Site visit recommendations given from SC Hospital Association May 2013 – Tobacco Grant Received in collaboration with USC system. This grant is not a part of the Working Well Initiative but it will help in the pillar of Tobacco within Working Well. Tobacco Free Initiative The USC system was awarded a Tobacco Free Engagement Grant. This grant is to start the engagement process moving towards a Tobacco Free Environment. o o o All campuses have signed MOU. Upstate is currently Tobacco Free USC Columbia will implement a Tobacco Free Policy January 1, 2014. Budget: • • $429 – Phase I – Materials for committee – binders, copies, pens, task force work $1671 – Phase II – Communication, Survey tools, Travel to Summit Resources to be benchmarked: • • Healthy Campus 2020 WELCOA 7 Benchmarks Charge as a committee • USC Aiken has been awarded a grant to engage the USC Aiken community in the discussion, development and proposal of a Tobacco Free Policy. As a part of this grant, a Tobacco Free Task Force has been established with the following charge: o to evaluate the current policies on Tobacco at USC Aiken o review and implement a survey to determine the attitudes surrounding tobacco at USC Aiken o create a Tobacco Free Policy that is to be given to Chancellor Jordan. § The grant does not stipulate that USC Aiken must adopt this policy. That decision will be made at the cabinet level. Communication/Language • • • Individuals may be confusing our committee with USC’s new Tobacco Free Policy that will be implemented January 1, 2014. Using the language “Tobacco Free” and not Smoke Free when talking about the policy that is being created. Development of a Web Site dedicated to the Tobacco Free initiative. o Contacting Marketing about this component Grant Time Line • • • • • May 2013 – MOU signed July 5, 2013 – Progress Report Due o July 1, 2013 -­‐ Faculty/Staff Survey being sent out via USCA List Serve on Wellness Activities and interest in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Tobacco Task Force o Committees being formed; Any assessments previously completed reviewed October 5, 2013 – Progress Report Due o Committee meetings in progress; Assessments chosen ; Tobacco Vision and time line created January 5, 2014 – Progress Report Due o Assessment completed and analyzed; Engagement of campus partners; Town halls held September, 2014 (or prior to this date) o Policy recommendation forwarded to the Chancellor Roles and Responsibilities – Phase 1: September 2013-­‐December 2013 o o Researching Current surveys that have taken place at USC Aiken § Housing – EBI Survey (Students) § Counseling Center – Core Survey (Students) § SGA’s information survey at Get on Board Days (Students) § Faculty/Staff -­‐ ? Implementing a survey surrounding Tobacco for Faculty/Staff and Students § USC’s School of Public Health has created the survey to ensure that the questions are reliable and valid. All campuses are using the same question formats but can choose which questions to ask. § The surveys can be different for students and faculty/staff if prefer § The sample survey is in the Drop Box Roles and Responsibilities – Phase 2: January 2014-­‐April 2014 o o o o Educating the campus on the survey results; Tobacco related issues; Social Norming § Hold informational sessions Develop a Policy § Prepare of Timeline of Implementation, Adoption and Evaluation § Prepare a communications plan § Prepare an implementation and enforcement strategy Policy Created and given to Dr. Jordan May 1, 2014 or before Education and Cessation Programs § Communication for Faculty/Staff on benefit options § Determine if the development of on campus Smoking Cessation programs is needed NEXT STEPS: • • • • • For the next meeting review the survey and provide comments in the Drop Box in the SURVEY COMMENTS document. Remember to hit save every time you enter in new information. o USC will be available to answer any questions we have about the survey. o Working with USC and Institutional Effectiveness on how the survey is sent out to students, faculty and staff. § USC will send us a link to the survey – we will need to determine how we then get the information out to our community. § Implementation of Survey for USC Aiken Campus: November 4 – November 15th Information from completed Surveys o EBI – Hope o Core Survey – Cindy o Faculty/Staff – Maria Think about what specific roles you would like to be a part of within the Task Force. Within the subcommittee groups there will be the need to pull in other individuals from across campus when we get to that point. o Communication Plan § Faculty/Staff communication § Student Communication o Implementation Subcommittee o Enforcement Subcommittee To be proactive with communication are there any groups/committees/meetings that we should be inviting ourselves to to talk about the Tobacco Free Task Force? o SGA – Will be speaking to them in the next few weeks o Campus Life Committee – October 7th at 4:30pm o Dr. Priest has told the Faculty Advisory Committee about the Task Force and asked if they would like to have someone come in to talk about the Tobacco Free Task Force.
