Ms. Bent’s World Geography Welcome to your 7th Grade World Geography class, the class that’s going to help you discover the world! Throughout the year, we will study the Eastern Hemisphere. Our class units are divided into four quarters. Below is a general outline (subject to change) of the topics and regions we will study: 1st Quarter (August 17 - October 15) Regions of Study: Introduction to the Globe, Europe Essential Question: How does human ingenuity solve problems? Content Question: Why do people come together to form unions, such as the European Union? Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity – humans as thinkers, inventors, and creators 2nd Quarter (October 19 – December 18) Regions of Study: Russia and the Middle East Essential Question: Why do we live where we live? Content Question: How has the environment in North and Southwest Asia shaped the lives of the people who live there? Area of Interaction: Community and Service – being a responsible citizen in the world 3rd Quarter (January 5 – March 12) Region of Study: Africa Essential Question: How much control do humans really have? Content Question: What are some of the issues facing Africa today? Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education – total development of the person and of the society 4th Quarter (March 22 - May27) Regions of Study: Asia, and Antarctica (and possibly Australia) Essential Question: How do human actions impact the environment? Content Question: How are East Asia and Antarctica dealing with the relationship between population and environment? Area of Interaction: Environment – humans depend on nature, nature depends on humans Essential Learnings for all 7th Grade World Geography Students: 1. Use, interpret, and analyze geographic tools to derive information about people, places, and environments. 2. Apply knowledge of people, places, and environments to understand the relationship between the past and present and to plan for the future. 3. Understand how human populations depend on, cooperate, and conflict with one another. 4. Understand effects of interactions between humans and the physical environment. 5. Recognize a people’s culture, environment, and experience influences their perception of the world. Important Class Information You will often be working in small groups or partners in World Geography. Therefore, respect for yourself and for every other person in the room is crucial to having a successful and safe classroom environment. We will also be studying many different customs and cultures. Respect for these various cultures is also an important characteristic of our class. Students are expected to arrive to class prepared with their student planner, binder, spiral notebook, paper, writing utensils (colors/highlighters) and any homework assignments, on time, and ready to learn with an open mind.
